This role reports directly to the Managing Director of the division to drive marketing across one of emap’s most interesting divisions. This role is based within emap’s Emerald division (mostly based in Croydon). The brands and sectors served by the Emerald division are as follows:
- Commercial Real Estate - Property Week
- Technology - AV Magazine, Electronics Weekly
- Retail/Packaging/Food - Motor Trader/Independent Retail News (Including Talking Retail) DFNI (including Frontier), Packaging News, Quality Food Awards
- Energy and Refining (Based in West London) - PTQ/Digital Refining/Decarbonisation Technology/PTQ India
- Education - Metropolis Education/Boarding Schools Guide
- Lead generation - ‘EDGE’
The Emerald business is a multi-platform business reflected in the following revenue mix. Next year the business is expecting annual revenues of £15m, with 50% coming from events, 20% from subscriptions, and the remainder through lead generation and marketing-solutions activities. Ten years ago the business had most of its revenues in print advertising, and we continue to prioritise a path of growing paid content, events and lead generation activities.
Overall Purpose of the Role: This is a leadership role with a brief to grow the Emerald division revenues and profits by leading our marketing function across all activities, driving subscription revenues, growing event revenues, and working with others to launch products that drive engagement, and support a large marketing-solutions business.
The Head of Marketing works in a collaborative ‘matrix’ fashion with publishers, editors and event directors, together with web development and technology functions to deliver growth for the business, and they work with the Heads of Marketing and leaders in the other 4 Emap divisions. Influencing and collaboration skills are thus important.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead marketing at a strategic and commercial level for the portfolio and input into companywide activities.
- With the MD decide on priorities in marketing, in the face of increasing and often conflicting demands.
- Direct the marketing activities for the portfolio including audience development, events, paid subscriptions, data growth and management and driving sponsorship and advertising enquiries, and ensuring brand activities such as show attendance are at a high level.
- Review current team structure and design a team organisation, which allows for delivery across an extensive range of activities, within the financial constraints the company can afford.
- Lead, motivate and mentor the team.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time and to budget.
- Manage targets, revenue generation and KPIs across the portfolio.
- Set and control budgets and report regularly on targets, spend and activity.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, suppliers, and associations.
- Be the driver in maintaining brand values, brand recognition and reputation.
- Put data at the core of the portfolio growth, and with the MD develop data strategy across the portfolio. Ensure data is up to date and constantly renewed.
- Maintain superior quality marketing communications across the portfolio and promote best practice.
- Represent the company on association committees such as the PPA and the ABC.
