The successful candidate will be a graduate in Classics, able to demonstrate a strong knowledge of Latin, have high academic standards and be able to enthuse pupils of all ages. Experience in a similarly high-performing academic environment would be advantageous. The Classics Department at Eltham College aims to instil a genuine passion for the subject in its students to ensure a life-long interest in the ancient world. Lessons are designed to be thought-provoking and responsive to student needs. We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual who shares these values. The Classics department is staffed by two full-time teachers and has a well-stocked library and a wealth of IT resources. The department has a new home in the newly constructed Turberville building where all Modern Languages, Maths and Sixth Form are hosted.
Within the language curriculum, all pupils on joining the school study Latin in Year 7 and Year 8. It becomes a popular optional subject in Year 9, and finally a firm GCSE option in Year 10. We offer Ancient Greek to a small but enthusiastic group of students; while Ancient Greek language skills would be desirable, they are not essential. Each year, around thirty pupils in Year 11 take the Eduqas GCSE examination, achieving consistently excellent results, with the vast majority attaining grades 8 - 9. In the Sixth Form, a small but committed group of students follows the OCR course through to A Level, with a significant proportion successfully applying to read Classics at leading universities.
Outside of lessons, the department offers an enrichment programme with a range of activities, including trips to sites of classical interest both in this country and abroad, museums, plays and lecture visits. Eltham College is a highly successful independent day school in south-east London, educating boys and girls aged 7 to 18 across both Junior and Senior Schools. The College has grown considerably over recent years: there are now over students in the Senior School and around pupils in the Junior School and places are heavily oversubscribed. Since girls have been able to join Years 3 and 7, mirroring the Sixth Form which has been coeducational for over 45 years. The school places an equal emphasis on academic, pastoral and co-curricular excellence and has an outstanding reputation in all three areas as well as for the friendly, unpretentious nature of daily life.
A highly competitive salary is available, together with a clear programme of staff development and opportunities for promotion. Accommodation may also be available.
Application closing date: 8am on Friday 13 March. Interviews to take place on Wednesday 18 March. Suitable candidates may be interviewed before the closing date and Eltham College reserves the right to withdraw the position if an early appointment is made.
