The Headmaster and CEO of Eltham College Family of Schools is seeking to appoint an inspirational and highly professional teacher to Second in Charge of Computer Science to join a successful and committed Computer Science department at Eltham College. We would welcome applications from experienced teachers of Computer Science as well as those who may be in the earlier stages of their teaching careers, but who are looking to develop into leading a Computer Science department in the future. Experience in a similarly high-performing academic environment would be advantageous. A commitment to excellent pastoral care, enriching co-curricular activities and outreach activities is also expected.
The Computing department is amongst the best performing departments in the school. At GCSE and A level it attracts high calibre students with a strong work ethic and a desire to fully understand the subject. Many students go on to read Computer Science at University and are therefore keen to extend their knowledge beyond the scope of exam board specifications. In years 10 to 11 we teach OCR GCSE Computer Science and in the Sixth Form we teach OCR’s A level in Computer Science. In years 7 to 9 students undertake an academically rigorous curriculum based on, but not limited by, the Computing Programme of Study. In year 7 students are introduced to computational thinking via the Python Programming language. From year 8 on, the department use C# as the main teaching language. A range of cloud applications are used to streamline teaching and learning, including CodeBash, GitHub, and Microsoft Teams. GCSE results have been excellent over recent years with a three-year average of 83% of pupils gaining Grade 7-9. A-Level results are exceptional, with a three-year average of 92% gaining a grade A or A*.
Pupils participate in various competitions and challenges across all age groups; currently we run Cyber-Security for Girls, PA Raspberry Pi Competition, Bebras/OUCC, Informatics Olympiad and the Perse Team Coding Challenge. The Computing department is well resourced with three teaching staff and three IT Suites. The department is forward-thinking and innovative; the successful candidate will therefore have the opportunity to develop ideas and resources, in a supportive and friendly environment.
Eltham College is a highly successful independent day school in south-east London, educating boys and girls aged 7 to 18 across both Junior and Senior Schools. The College has grown considerably over recent years: there are now over students in the Senior School and around pupils in the Junior School and places are heavily oversubscribed. Since girls have been able to join Years 3 and 7, mirroring the Sixth Form which has been coeducational for over 45 years. The school places an equal emphasis on academic, pastoral and co-curricular excellence and has an outstanding reputation in all three areas as well as for the friendly, unpretentious nature of daily life.
A highly competitive salary is available, together with a clear programme of staff development and opportunities for promotion. Accommodation may also be available.
Application closing date: 8am on Monday 16 March. Interviews to take place on Monday 23 March. Suitable candidates may be interviewed before the closing date and Eltham College reserves the right to withdraw the position if an early appointment is made.
