The Headmaster and CEO of Eltham College Family of Schools seeks to appoint an inspirational and highly professional Head of German to contribute to the development of the highly successful and dynamic Modern Languages department. The successful candidate will inspire others, lead by example, and support the school in meeting its aims with students, teachers and parents. They should be an outstanding classroom teacher able to teach across Years 7 to 13, have a genuine interest in German, commitment to high academic standards, and experience managing an academic department.

Responsibilities

  • Teach German across Years 7–13, including core in the Lower School and GCSE/A Level options.
  • Lead the German Department, setting curriculum and assessment standards (Pearson IGCSE in Years 10–11, AQA at A Level).
  • Develop and deliver a stimulating curriculum that encourages students to extend beyond exam specifications.
  • Provide pastoral care, tutor students, and contribute to co‑curricular programmes.
  • Oversee co‑curricular and outreach activities such as film projects, virtual exchanges, and trips to cultural destinations.
  • Collaborate with heads of other Modern Languages departments to promote languages school‑wide.
  • Support staff development, mentor teachers, and contribute to the wider school community.

Qualifications

  • Strong teaching experience across Years 7–13, with proven success in modern language teaching.
  • Leadership or management experience within an academic department.
  • Experience teaching a second language preferred.
  • Commitment to pastoral care and pastoral responsibilities.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and analytical skills.

Department Overview

The German Department is a popular and growing department with high retention rates. GCSE results have shown a three‑year average of 94% of pupils gaining grades 7–9, and A‑Level results routinely achieve 100% grade A. Students participate in film projects, letter/virtual exchanges, trips to the British Film Institute and overseas destinations, and regular debating and translation competitions.
