About the team

A&G, STMJ Technology is a global team that builds and runs the platforms and services behind Elsevier’s research and academic products. Within this, the Platform Engineering team—part of Operations—focuses on keeping our cloud environments reliable, secure and performing at scale. The team works closely with engineering and support teams to monitor systems, respond to incidents and continuously improve how our platforms run. Led by the Platform Manager and aligned to the wider technology organisation, the team plays a key role in supporting day-to-day operations while helping drive improvements across our AWS environment.

About the role

As a Systems Engineer (AWS), you will support the operation, maintenance and continuous improvement of cloud-based environments, ensuring systems remain stable, secure and scalable. Working closely with engineering and support teams, you will play a key role in monitoring system performance, responding to incidents and contributing to infrastructure improvements. You will assist with troubleshooting issues, supporting system configuration and automation, and contributing to change and release activities. Through collaboration and problem-solving, you will help improve system reliability, enhance monitoring and alerting capabilities, and support effective incident response and recovery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor system health and respond to alerts to maintain stability and performance
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of system and performance issues
  • Assist with system configuration, automation, and infrastructure improvements
  • Collaborate with engineering and support teams to resolve issues
  • Support incident response and system recovery activities
  • Help improve monitoring, alerting, and reporting capabilities
  • Contribute to capacity planning and scalability efforts
  • Apply security practices in daily operations
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation

Skills & Experience required:

  • Experience working with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) or similar environments
  • Familiarity with Linux/UNIX systems
  • Understanding of scripting or automation (e.g., Bash, Python, or similar)
  • Experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, EKS)
  • Exposure to tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or CI/CD pipelines
  • Awareness of infrastructure as code and DevOps practices
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., CloudWatch, New Relic)
  • Understanding of system security, backup, and recovery practices
  • Ability to problem-solve, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively
  • Willingness to learn and grow in a technical environment
