Due to organisational growth, ELM Alliance have vacancies for experienced Clinical Health Care Assistants to work in our Extended Access service on evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Please note that applicants working in domiciliary care or care homes are unlikely to be suitable unless they have previously worked in primary care and have the relevant skills for the role.

As part of the clinical team, the role will involve:

  • Providing phlebotomy, in accordance with current guidelines and local protocols.
  • Recording of ECGs.
  • Blood pressure monitoring.
  • Wound management and suture or stitch removal.
  • Urinalysis.
  • Having an understanding of QOF and IIF and how Primary Care and General Practice runs.
  • Referring patients to other clinicians as necessary.
  • Providing routine clinical care to patients according to locally approved protocols, under supervision of the Treatment Room Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or GP.

Primary Care experience and experience of working in a GP Practice. Working within Redcar, East Cleveland and Middlesbrough sites.

Main duties of the job:

  • Understand the principles of healthy living and provide relevant health promotion literature to patients.
  • Collect patient data such as blood pressure, height, weight and ECG in accordance with practice protocols and your competence to operate the necessary equipment.
  • Record data on patient electronic records in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Wound care, packing and dressings.
  • Suture and stitch removal.
  • Summarise patient notes and provide administrative assistance to the nursing team.
  • Provide smoking cessation support to patients in accordance with training and practice protocols.
  • Run Blood Pressure and ECG Clinics.
  • Prepare the consulting and treatment rooms for effective consultation and ensure trolley fully stocked, maintaining stocks of examination instruments, stores and specimen collection materials, and ensuring couches and workbenches or drawers are kept clean.
  • Maintain the system for monitoring and ordering clinical supplies.
  • Ensure that all specimens taken by clinicians, or brought in by patients, are ready for collection by pathology service.
  • Assist in maintaining safe storage of drugs and vaccines under the direction of the on-duty Nurse Practitioner/Practice Nurse/GP.
  • Emergency Trolley, monthly checks to ensure fully stocked or earlier where items need replenishing.
  • Damp dust weekly.
  • Defibrillator and oxygen daily check when service is open.

About us:

South Tees area comprises of 46 general practices with a long history of working together in their respective localities of Langbaurgh, Eston and Middlesbrough. It covers a total population of 290,000 and includes some of the most deprived areas in the country. The area has traditionally been one of the highest levels of emergency and unplanned attendance and hospital admissions in the country.

The ELM Extended Hours Service represents a major development towards integrated primary care, by extending access to primary care. The aim of the ELM Service is to provide a high quality, integrated and innovative primary care service, outside current core hours of care and led by General Practices.

The Healthcare Assistant will work in close partnership with the other key members of the ELM Service, ELM Alliance Management Team and external organisations to implement and deliver the ELM Services on time and within budget.

Job responsibilities:

  • Be a member of the clinical team.
  • Provide phlebotomy, in accordance with current guidelines and local protocols.
  • Be able to record ECGs.
  • Blood pressure monitoring.
  • Wound management and suture/stitch removal.
  • Urinalysis.
  • Have an understanding of QOF and IIF and how Primary Care and General Practice runs.

  • Maintain patient privacy and dignity at all times, respecting patients' rights and preferences, and adopt a non-judgemental manner when interacting with patients.

General Responsibilities:

Person Specification:

Experience:

  • NVQ level 3 in Health & Social Care.
  • Phlebotomy skills (Experience with paediatric bloods).
  • Venepuncture.
  • Experience in performing ECG.
  • Wound Care Management.
  • General Observations.

Qualifications:

  • NVQ Healthcare Level 3 or equivalent.
  • 5 GCSEs A-C or equivalent, to include English and Maths, and a science GCSE.
