The Alan Turing Institute, as the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, plays an important part in driving forward advances in these technologies in order to change the world for the better.

The Internal Communications Manager will join the Communications and Engagement Directorate, for a 12-month fixed term contract. The Internal Communications Manager will develop impactful and strategic communication plans, key messages and material that helps inform, educate, engage and encourage employees to contribute to strategic priorities. The role will report to the Head of Communications and Marketing and work closely with team members across the directorate. Key stakeholders include the People Directorate, the Academic Engagement team, the Executive Team and Executive Office and the Programme Management Unit. The role holder will line manage an Internal Communications Coordinator and will manage discrete projects involving individuals across different teams.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Act as the senior lead and in-house specialist on internal communications for the Institute, owning best practice and industry standards in this space, and manage major internal announcements.
  • Act as Communications Lead for the Transformation Programme, using the Internal Communications strategy as a guide and attending all transformation meetings.
  • Lead on Institute Town Hall quarterly events and all-hands meetings, making independent decisions that foster a community of dialogue, ideas-sharing and transparency in the Institute and seeking continuous improvement for these events.
  • Oversight of key internal emails channels that are produced by the Internal Communications Coordinator, providing guidance and sign-off, and empower other teams to develop their own content.
  • Lead on internal communications for the CEO, Executive and Senior Leadership teams, delivering a regular rhythm of blogs, in-person engagement opportunities and creative content and sourcing internal communication opportunities for them which support the Institute goals.
  • Line management of Internal Communications Coordinator.
  • Support the development of Business Continuity communications response planning from an internal stakeholder perspective.

Key skills and experience required:

  • An excellent track record of delivering effective internal communications campaigns especially around change communications.
  • Experience of developing and co-ordinating effective internal events or meetings and running post-event measurement and analytics.
  • Experience of managing an intranet that is also a two-way engagement programme.
  • Proven experience of line management.
  • Previous experience working in a research, higher education or science organisation.

The ideal candidate would be willing to work in the office 2 days a week and be immediately available or with a short notice period.
