The role of Design Manager involves specific responsibility for the management and co-ordination of the design elements across multiple projects. From tender enquiry to completion, you will define scope and areas of responsibility, identify processes, systems and procedures, monitor them, and ensure safety through the design function in accordance with CDM Regulations, Legislation and Group policy.

Key responsibilities:

  • Managerial accountability for the Ellmers contractual design obligations.
  • Ensure adequate management of all internal and external resources to achieve project deliverables.
  • Manage accurate and timely communication of relevant information to all stakeholders.
  • Ensure that the design programme is fully integrated with subcontract enquiries, materials procurement schedule, and cognisance of the overall construction programme.
  • Collaborate with all internal functions to ensure that all tender opportunities are robustly reviewed and prepared for in-house settlement meetings.
  • Manage a blended team of internal and external design coordinators, architects, engineers, or specialist subcontractors to satisfy the requirements of each specific project.
  • Review any BREEAM/CFSH or sustainability requirements in terms of design information to discharge obligations.
  • Develop design initiatives and offer value engineering during both the tender and build stage.

The ideal candidate:

  • At least 5 years experience and a proven track record of working in a similar environment.
  • Relevant degree qualification preferably with membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. MCIOB/ARB/RIBA).
  • Time management and organisation skills to manage multiple projects and oversee tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to understand and manage a variety of construction and design related technical disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of legal and contractual frameworks, i.e. D&B, Traditional and CDP items.
  • Familiarity with Microstation, Auto CAD, 3D design (e.g. BIM).
  • Decision making and analytical thinking skills, weighing costs and benefits to reach optimum decisions.
  • Ability to manage changing priorities at short notice, reallocating personnel and resources.
  • Thorough understanding of Health and Safety regulations with the ability to manage and mitigate risk.
  • Commercially aware with the ability to identify commercial risk and opportunity.
