The Role

In the role of Design Manager you will have specific responsibility for the management and co-ordination of the design elements across multiple projects. From tender enquiry to completion you will define scope and areas of responsibility, identify processes, systems and procedures, and thereafter monitor the same, and ensure safety through he design function in accordance with CDM Regulations, Legislation and Group policy.

Key responsibilities

  • Managerial accountability for the Ellmers contractual design obligations.
  • Ensure adequate management of all internal and external resources in order to achieve the project deliverables.
  • Manage accurate and timely communication of relevant information to all stakeholders.
  • Ensure that the design programme is fully integrated with the subcontract enquiries, materials procurement schedule and with cognisance of the overall construction programme.
  • Collaborate with all internal functions to ensure that all tender opportunities are robustly reviewed and prepared for in-house settlement meetings.
  • Manage a blended team of internal and external design coordinators, architects, engineers or specialist subcontractors to satisfy the requirements of each specific project.
  • Review of any BREEAM/CFSH or sustainability requirements in terms of design information to discharge obligations.
  • Develop design initiatives and offer value engineering during both the tender and build stage.

The ideal candidate

With at least 5 years experience, and a proven track record of working in a similar environment, the ideal candidate will hold a relevant degree qualification preferably with membership of a recognised professional body (eg. MCIOB/ARB/RIBA), and be able to demonstrate the following skill set:

  • Time management and organisation to allow the management of multiple projects and oversee tasks simultaneously;
  • ability to understand and manage a variety of construction and design related technical disciplines
  • Working knowledge of legal and contractual frameworks. i.e. D&B, Traditional and CDP items.
  • Familiar with Microstation, Auto CAD, 3D design i.e. BIM, etc.
  • Decision making, analytical thinking, weighing costs and benefits and applying knowledge to allow the optimum decision to be reached;
  • Ability to manage changing priorities at short notice, reallocation of personnel and resources;
  • Thorough understanding of Health and Safety regulations with the ability to manage and mitigate risk;
  • Commercially aware and ability to Identify commercial risk & opportunity
