Elliott Wood works with like-minded people to engineer a better society. We engineer for the common good – from making dramatic improvements to the life of a town or a city, through to nurturing a new generation of exceptional technical and creative thinkers. Engineering is often about the unseen, but we aim to reveal the hidden opportunities in every structure, making it work harder and uncovering new assets for our clients.
With more than twenty years in practice, we continue to be curious. We are no ordinary engineers. We are activists for a new kind of engineering profession, in which technical and creative thinking are combined, and in which our craft is re-evaluated by clients and collaborators.
The Role
We are looking for a talented, forward-thinking Senior Structural Engineer, with at least 5+ years of post-graduate experience, including at least 1 year within the UK, who wants to make a difference. Ideally you will have achieved or are working towards Chartership. We’d love you to have worked with timber and composites as well!
You’ll work on a diverse range of projects including high-end commercial new build projects, complex refurbishments of existing buildings, mass housing projects and masterplans, school projects as well as architecturally challenging private residential projects. Alongside this, you’ll be part of a team who are always striving to do things better, not just technically but ethically, to positively impact the climate emergency.
You will:
- Assist in the delivery of client projects to time and budget.
- Work on all aspects of design for various small and medium sized projects, with minimum supervision, and on larger projects, spend time on selected technical issues.
- Work closely with other teams within Elliott Wood including Sustainability and Civils.
- For small and medium sized projects deal with all aspects of design from inception through to completion of works on site with only limited supervision.
- Involvement in appointment and fee issues, assisting senior members of the team as required.
- Instruct technicians to carry out production information as and when required.
- Liaise with Architects, Clients and other external professionals whilst carrying out your duties.
- Make periodic visits to site to monitor the works as they proceed—including attending site meetings and dealing with queries as they arise.
- Be proactive in your approach to your own training and IPD/CPD within the Practice framework.
About You
Ideally have at least 6+ years of experience within a similar organisation and be chartered or working towards this. Your experience should include at least 1 year within the UK. Have managed smaller client projects and/or practice management issues. Strong academic history with a relevant degree or equivalent from a well-recognised University. Experienced in working in multi-disciplinary teams, including ideally high-profile Architects. Good project management skills, including an ability to manage time, resources, costs and communication within and outside the Practice. Strong team working ability, able to influence, explain and present a professional image at all times. Open, positive and approachable attitude. Excellent communication skills, fluent in written and spoken English.
