The Role: This role will be responsible for providing direction for the Civil Engineering team, overseeing multiple projects, ensuring a high quality and profitable delivery. You will be an inspiring leader who motivates their team, contributes to company strategy, and constant business improvement.

Responsibilities: Your duties will include the following:

  • Supporting the direction for the civil engineering team within Elliott Wood’s overall vision.
  • Contributing to strategy, organisational development and continuous business improvement.
  • Providing effective team leadership and professional development.
  • Providing technical leadership on complex civil engineering projects, ensuring high-quality design and delivery.
  • Ensuring high standards of financial management for overall team budgets, income and expenditure.
  • Identifying and securing new business opportunities, fostering client relationships, and driving revenue growth.

Strategy:

  • Working closely with other disciplines to deliver integrated design solutions.
  • Driving innovation in sustainable and low-carbon infrastructure design.
  • Contributing to the overall financial performance of the company.
  • Maintaining professional qualifications and developing technical ability to match industry best practice.

Technical and Project Delivery:

  • Overseeing multiple projects including infrastructure, drainage, highways, and flood risk management and ensuring high quality and profitable delivery.
  • Excellent project management - including appointments, fees, workload allocation, project checking and troubleshooting to ensure quality and creativity in proposed solutions.
  • Monitoring that infrastructure engineering design principles (e.g. drainage networks, external levels) and other civil engineering aspects (e.g. flood risk, vehicle tracking), are applied/addressed appropriately on team projects, undertaking reviews and providing team and practice wide guidance and coaching where required.
  • Monitoring that relevant regulations and codes of practice are applied to team projects, providing team and practice wide guidance where required.

Business Development:

  • Seek, identify, develop and pursue opportunities for new and existing business development.
  • Representing the company at industry events, networking opportunities, and client meetings.

Team Management:

  • Providing effective team leadership – including resource allocation, performance management and recognition.
  • Managing team performance, recruitment, and professional development.
  • Leading and mentoring civil engineers at various career stages.
  • Inspiring, encouraging, and motivating team to maximise potential and to practice ethos and values.
  • Ensuring the team has the skills and resources needed for successful project delivery.

Practice Development:

  • Implementing digital design tools and emerging technologies.
  • Setting and managing budgets for the civil engineering division.
  • Providing update reports to Directors for monitoring and planning purposes.
  • Actively supporting CPD activity across the practice and at internal Academy events.
  • Contributing and aligning with the company ESG strategies and initiatives.
  • Ensuring any positive impacts are called out for the company to acknowledge.

Essential Experience: You will have the following:

  • Chartered status Engineer MICE
  • Highly developed technical competency in building structures
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD

Additional Experience: In addition to the above, we’d also love you to have:

  • Min 5 yrs relevant post-chartered experience
  • Highly developed technical competence
  • Previous experience with competitors
  • Demonstrable high standards of project management
  • Evidence of ability to contribute to driving practice management forward
  • Involvement with high profile Architects
  • People/team management experience
