We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our low carbon solutions team, specializing in heat networks, district heating, and decarbonisation projects. In this role, you will lead the mechanical design process from initial concept through to handover with installation teams, ensuring that innovative heating solutions are delivered efficiently and to the highest technical standards. You will work across the full project lifecycle, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to translate decarbonisation objectives into robust, implementable designs. Your expertise will be critical in optimizing system performance, managing technical challenges, and ensuring seamless transitions between design and on-site execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive mechanical designs for heat network and district heating systems, from conceptual phase through detailed engineering and technical specifications.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and thermal analysis to evaluate decarbonisation solutions and optimise system efficiency.
  • Prepare technical documentation, drawings, and specifications for installation teams, ensuring clarity and compliance with industry standards.
  • Collaborate with cross‐functional teams including civil engineers, controls specialists, and project managers to integrate mechanical systems into broader decarbonisation projects.
  • Manage design reviews, technical assessments, and quality assurance processes to verify design integrity and performance.
  • Liaise directly with installation teams during handover phases, providing technical support and resolving on‐site design queries.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, best practices, and regulatory requirements in heat networks and low carbon heating solutions.
  • Support cost estimation, schedule planning, and risk assessment for mechanical design components.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for candidates who bring a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in mechanical design, with a proven track record in heat networks, district heating, or decarbonisation projects. You should demonstrate strong technical competency across the entire design lifecycle—from concept development to installation handover—and possess the ability to translate complex requirements into practical, high‐quality designs. We value engineers who combine rigorous analytical skills with pragmatic problem‐solving, who communicate effectively across technical and non‐technical stakeholders, and who are genuinely committed to advancing low carbon solutions.

Experience & Expertise Required

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in mechanical design, with substantial involvement in heat networks, district heating systems, or decarbonisation projects.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design software and CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of thermal systems, piping design, heat exchanger selection, and system optimisation.
  • Experience managing the full design cycle from concept and feasibility through detailed design and installation handover.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards, codes, and regulatory frameworks for heating systems and decarbonisation.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clear technical documentation, drawings, and specifications.
  • Experience collaborating with installation teams and supporting on‐site technical resolution.

Qualities & Work Approach

  • Strong analytical and problem‐solving mindset, with the ability to balance technical excellence with practical feasibility.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proactive and collaborative approach to working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement.
  • Genuine passion for decarbonisation and sustainable energy solutions.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn emerging technologies and methodologies in the low carbon sector.

Role Impact & Success

This role is central to delivering effective decarbonisation outcomes, where your mechanical design expertise directly influences the performance, reliability, and scalability of heat network projects. Success is measured by the technical quality of your designs, the seamless handover to installation teams, and the tangible contribution your work makes to advancing low carbon heating solutions.
