Through high-quality teaching, encouragement, and consistency, you will help learners develop the skills, confidence, and recognised qualifications they need to progress into employment, apprenticeships, further education, and independent adulthood.

Working on a term-time only basis (41 weeks per year), this role offers an excellent work-life balance while providing the opportunity to make a genuine and lasting difference to the lives of young people every day.

As a Functional Skills Teacher, you will create engaging, inclusive, and inspiring lessons that encourage learners to achieve their full potential. You will understand that every learner is different and be able to adapt your teaching to meet a wide range of abilities, learning styles, and individual needs. Working collaboratively with colleagues, support staff, families, and external professionals, you will contribute to a positive learning culture where learners feel safe, valued, and motivated to succeed.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering engaging and differentiated Functional Skills Maths and English lessons from Entry Level to Level 2.
  • Planning creative and personalised learning programmes that reflect learners' individual needs, interests, and aspirations.
  • Assessing learner progress through effective target setting, monitoring, and feedback to ensure positive outcomes.
  • Building positive, professional relationships with learners that promote confidence, resilience, attendance, and engagement.
  • Working closely with families, colleagues, and external agencies to provide holistic support for learners.
  • Promoting positive behaviour through consistent expectations, restorative approaches, and effective classroom management.
  • Creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where every learner can succeed.
  • Contributing to curriculum planning and continuous improvement to ensure teaching remains engaging, relevant, and effective.
  • Supporting wider pastoral development and enrichment activities that encourage personal growth and independence.
  • Maintaining accurate learner records and contributing to quality assurance processes.

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, adaptable, and committed to making a positive impact on the lives of young people. You will have:

  • A recognised teaching qualification.
  • Experience delivering high-quality Functional Skills or GCSE Maths and/or English programmes.
  • Strong lesson planning and curriculum delivery skills with the ability to differentiate effectively.
  • Experience working with young people who have additional learning needs, SEMH needs, or complex behaviours.
  • Excellent behaviour management skills and the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with learners.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A flexible, patient, and solution-focused approach to teaching.
  • A genuine passion for inclusive education and helping learners overcome barriers to achieve their goals.
