Ready to come off the tools without leaving your technical expertise behind? If you have spent years installing, commissioning, programming and fault-finding technical systems, but the travelling, call-outs and life on the road are beginning to lose their appeal, this could be a fantastic next step.
We are recruiting a Senior Technical Support Engineer to join an established technical team in Basingstoke. This is a predominantly office-based technical position, providing expert support to installers, engineers and customers by telephone and email.
You do not need to already work in Technical Support. We are equally interested in experienced field-based engineers, including those from the Fire & Security industry, who have strong technical and fault-finding skills and would now like to use that knowledge in a more settled Monday-to-Friday environment.
The Role
- You will become one of the organisation's go-to technical experts, providing practical advice and support across a range of products and applications.
- Providing telephone and email technical support to installers, engineers and customers.
- Diagnosing faults and helping engineers resolve technical problems remotely.
- Advising on programming, installation, configuration and product selection.
- Providing guidance on replacement components and spare parts.
- Delivering technical and product training.
- Supporting Sales with technical queries and product specifications.
- Assisting with technical documentation and training materials.
- Mentoring junior Technical Support Engineers.
- Occasionally visiting customers or sites where additional technical support is required.
Who Are We Looking For?
The job title on your CV is far less important than your technical knowledge and aptitude. You could currently be a:
- Field Service Engineer
- Security / Fire & Security Engineer
- Access Control Engineer
- Installation or Commissioning Engineer
- Service or Maintenance Engineer
- Technical / Applications Engineer
- Technical Support Engineer
We are particularly interested in engineers with experience across some combination of:
- Gate automation
- Access control and electronic security
- Barriers and bollards
- Parking and vehicle access systems
- Automatic or industrial doors
- Perimeter protection
- Motors and electro-mechanical equipment
- Control boards and panels
- Programming and configuration
- Installation and commissioning
- Technical fault finding
Security Engineers – Do Not Rule Yourself Out
If your background is predominantly Electronic Security, Fire & Security or Access Control, we would still really like to hear from you. Engineers comfortable with control equipment, hardware, electronics, programming, commissioning and methodical fault finding can bring highly transferable skills to this environment. Likewise, you do not need to come directly from gate automation. Strong candidates could equally come from parking systems, barriers, automatic doors, industrial doors, vehicle access, perimeter protection or other electro-mechanical products.
What Will Make You Stand Out?
Alongside strong hands-on technical knowledge, experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
- Supporting engineers with complex technical problems.
- Providing technical support remotely or over the telephone.
- Training engineers, installers or customers.
- Supporting distributors or installation partners.
- Producing technical documentation.
- Providing technical support to Sales teams.
Most importantly, you should enjoy solving problems, communicating with people and sharing your technical knowledge.
Why Make the Move?
For the right person, this is as much a lifestyle opportunity as a career opportunity. If you have spent years travelling between sites, sitting in motorway traffic, working outside in all weathers or participating in call-out rotas, this is an opportunity to retain the technical side of your career while gaining a more settled working life.
You can look forward to:
- Monday-to-Friday working
- Home every evening
- No emergency call-out rota
- No travelling between multiple sites every day
- Less physically demanding work
- Using your technical expertise every day
- Becoming a recognised product expert
- Training and mentoring other engineers
- Long-term technical career progression
It is important to understand that this is a permanently office-based position in Basingstoke, so it represents a genuine lifestyle change from field engineering. You may be giving up some of the things associated with life on the road - such as a company van, overtime, call-out payments and travel pay - but if you are ready for a more settled working life, the trade-off could be exactly what you are looking for.
Interested?
If you are technically strong, enjoy fault finding and have reached the point where you would rather use the knowledge you have accumulated than spend another few years living out of a van, we would love to hear from you.
