Join Elexon as Head of Architecture and Design (EMRS): lead enterprise architecture, shape technology strategy, and drive scalable, resilient solutions supporting critical energy settlement services and the path to Net Zero.
We’re looking for a senior technology leader to head up Architecture and Design within EMR Settlement (EMRS). In this role, you’ll define and own the architecture vision, principles and roadmap, ensuring all systems and solutions align with strategic, regulatory and operational needs.
Acting as both a people leader and architectural authority, you’ll lead a team of architects and design analysts, champion governance and best practice, and work closely with stakeholders and vendors to deliver high-quality, future-proofed technology solutions across EMRS.
What you’ll do
- Lead the architecture and design capability that underpins critical energy settlement services supporting the UK’s transition to Net Zero.
- Shape and deliver the EMRS technology vision, ensuring systems and processes are robust, scalable and aligned to strategic objectives.
- Champion architecture as a key enabler of business success.
- Lead and develop a high-performing team of Architects and Design Analysts, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Define, maintain and evolve EMRS architecture principles, standards and governance frameworks.
- Own the EMRS technology strategy and roadmap, ensuring alignment with business priorities and long-term service evolution.
- Provide oversight and leadership across all aspects of system architecture, ensuring solutions are resilient, scalable and cost-effective.
- Establish strong governance to ensure all solutions comply with architectural standards and strategic direction.
- Build and manage strategic relationships with technology vendors, ensuring delivery aligns with EMRS objectives.
- Collaborate with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to ensure architecture supports business, operational and regulatory requirements.
- Champion architecture across EMRS, Elexon and key partners, clearly articulating its value to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support the delivery and change pipeline, embedding architectural thinking early in the lifecycle.
- Provide architectural oversight across regulatory, operational and change initiatives.
What you’ll bring
- You’re a strategic and credible technology leader with deep expertise in enterprise architecture and a strong track record of delivering complex technology solutions in regulated environments.
- You combine technical depth with excellent stakeholder engagement skills, enabling you to influence at all levels and translate complex requirements into clear, practical solutions.
- Essential experience and skills
- Strong expertise in Enterprise Architecture, frameworks and design principles (TOGAF or equivalent certification).
- Proven experience in IT service delivery within complex or large-scale environments.
- Ability to make strategic, evidence-based decisions on technology direction and priorities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills across all organisational levels.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver results in fast-paced, delivery-focused environments.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to simplify complex challenges.
- Experience leading or contributing to large-scale technology delivery and transformation programmes.
- Understanding of commercial considerations in technology delivery and vendor management.
- Ability to interpret and communicate complex technical and regulatory information.
- Experience implementing and operating architecture governance frameworks.
- Ability to translate regulatory and governance requirements into effective technology solutions.
- Knowledge of the energy market, particularly Electricity Market Reform (EMR) schemes.
- Understanding of how scheme rules translate into systems and operational processes.
- Financial awareness, including budget management and cost tracking.
- Experience leading teams across the full system or product lifecycle.
- Ability to manage risk and develop sustainable support models.
- Familiarity with industry governance frameworks, including the Balancing and Settlement Code.
- Experience with tools such as Sparx Enterprise Architect, UML modelling tools, DevOps or Jira.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Azure and associated technologies.
