Interim Lawyer – Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E)
Duration: 7 months
Working Pattern: Full-time preferred; 3–4 days per week considered
Location: UK-based (hybrid or fully remote considered; occasional travel may be required)
Our customer, a large UK-based organisation is seeking an experienced HS&E lawyer to join its in-house legal team on a fixed-term basis. The successful individual will ideally have 5+ years' PQE and sufficient seniority to act as the primary internal point of contact for health, safety and environmental legal advice.
Key Responsibilities- Acting as the lead legal adviser on health & safety and environmental matters across the organisation.
- Managing environmental and H&S incidents, including regulator engagement and handling potentially contentious communications.
- Advising on investigations, enforcement action and health & safety claims.
- Supporting environmental management system compliance, including ISO 14001 recertification, legal reviews and addressing audit findings.
- Drafting and negotiating HS&E-related contractual provisions with customers and suppliers.
- Advising on hazardous substances and waste-related issues (e.g. asbestos, radon), coordinating with external experts where required.
- Conducting legislative horizon scanning and supporting implementation of regulatory change across the business.
- Providing practical, commercially focused advice to senior stakeholders, including executive-level colleagues.
- Qualified solicitor in England & Wales with a current practising certificate.
- Strong experience in environmental and health & safety law, ideally gained in-house or within leading private practice.
- Confident operating autonomously while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams (e.g. property, facilities, risk, sustainability and audit functions).
- Comfortable engaging directly with regulators and managing sensitive or high-profile matters.
