The Role

Our client is a well-established specialist foodservice distribution business supplying premium products to customers across London.

They are seeking an experienced and highly organised Assistant Transport Manager to support their busy daytime transport operation.

Reporting to the Transport Manager, you will assist with the day-to-day management of the transport function, ensuring deliveries are completed safely, efficiently and on time.

You will support a fleet of more than 30 vehicles operating across London and help maintain full legal and Operator Licence compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the daily management of transport and delivery operations.
  • Lead, motivate and manage drivers, maintaining high standards of performance and customer service.
  • Plan and review delivery routes to improve efficiency, vehicle utilisation and service levels.
  • Ensure compliance with Operator Licence requirements and transport legislation.
  • Monitor drivers’ hours, Working Time Directive requirements, tachograph records and vehicle checks.
  • Coordinate vehicle servicing, inspections, MOTs, repairs and defect reporting.
  • Ensure vehicles are roadworthy, clean and available for operation.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, delivery issues and customer complaints.
  • Monitor transport KPIs, including on-time delivery, operating costs, vehicle utilisation and driver performance.
  • Maintain accurate transport and compliance records.
  • Work closely with warehouse, operations and customer-service teams.
  • Support continuous improvement and the future development of the fleet.
  • Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • A valid Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
  • Previous experience in transport operations, ideally as an Assistant Transport Manager, Transport Supervisor or Transport Team Leader.
  • Good knowledge of Operator Licence requirements, drivers’ hours, the Working Time Directive and transport compliance.
  • Experience supervising drivers and managing daily delivery operations.
  • Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Good IT skills, ideally including transport-management or route-planning systems.
  • Flexibility to work occasional Saturdays when required.

Desirable

  • Experience within foodservice, chilled-food distribution, hospitality supply or another multi-drop delivery environment.
  • Experience supporting transport operations across London.
  • Knowledge of larger commercial vehicles and fleet-expansion projects.
  • Working Pattern

This is a permanent day-shift role, worked five days per week.

The usual working pattern is Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturdays required.

When a Saturday is worked, an alternative day off will be provided during the week
