Legal Counsel – Regulatory & Competition

12-month contract | UK Remote | ASAP Start | Global Payments & Financial Technology

We are supporting a leading global payments and financial technology business to hire an experienced Legal Counsel – Regulatory & Competition to join its UK/EMEA Legal function on an initial 12-month contract.

The role will provide legal support across financial services regulation, payments law, competition/antitrust matters, regulatory investigations and enforcement activity across the UK and Europe.

The successful candidate will provide practical, commercially focused legal advice in a fast-moving and highly regulated environment, working closely with Legal, Compliance and wider

business teams.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advising on UK/EU financial services and payments regulation, including FCA requirements, PSD2/SCA and consumer protection.
  • Supporting regulatory investigations, enforcement proceedings, information requests and statutory notices.
  • Advising on competition and antitrust risks arising from commercial arrangements, strategic partnerships, exclusivity and merchant/scheme agreements.
  • Drafting and reviewing regulator-facing submissions, policy positions and legal responses.
  • Working with and coordinating external counsel on regulatory, competition and contentious matters.
  • Advising on cybersecurity incidents, data breaches and fraud events, including regulatory notification requirements.
  • Working closely with Compliance, Product, Government Relations, Communications and international Legal teams on cross-border matters.
  • Providing clear and commercially focused advice on complex and time-sensitive legal issues.

About you:

  • Qualified lawyer in England & Wales or an equivalent jurisdiction.
  • Experience in financial services regulatory and/or competition law.
  • Experience within financial services, payments, fintech or another highly regulated environment.
  • Experience supporting or managing regulatory investigations, enforcement or regulatory engagements.
  • Strong legal drafting and regulator-facing advocacy skills.
  • Experience working with external legal counsel on complex matters.
  • Good commercial judgement and stakeholder management skills.
  • Comfortable handling confidential and privileged matters in a fast-paced environment.
