Work model: Freelance / self-employed Hybrid
About Elemented: Elemented is building a more design-led residential studio, bringing together architectural thinking, spatial clarity, and delivery control under one roof. We work on high-value residential projects and are looking for an Architect in Residence to support that shift. We are particularly interested in someone who brings not just strong residential experience, but a distinctive design perspective. Someone with original thinking, creative range, and a feel for unusual, intelligent, cool-premium residential design.
The opportunity: This is a flexible role for a freelance or self-employed architect who wants to contribute to a growing residential studio without taking on a traditional employed position. The role is centred around light weekly advisory input, early-stage project thinking, and selected involvement in live projects. We expect the core commitment to be around 8 hours per week, and in some cases less, depending on project needs. Any direct project work or implementation scope would be paid separately.
What you would do:
- Support early-stage spatial planning and layout thinking
- Contribute to flow, light, proportion, and functional clarity
- Provide architectural input into Clarity Packs
- Join selected client meetings where architectural perspective adds value
- Review live projects and support early design direction
- Contribute to the wider evolution of Elemented as a more design-led studio
Who this suits: This is likely to suit an architect who:
- Is freelance, self-employed, or running a small independent practice
- Has strong residential design experience in the UK
- Wants to stay close to live projects and client thinking
- Is interested in the relationship between design, cost, and delivery
- Enjoys advisory input, problem solving, and early-stage thinking
- Values flexibility but wants a meaningful studio connection
- Brings a unique perspective, not just standard solutions
- Has strong creative instinct and original design thinking
- Is drawn to unusual, intelligent, cool-premium residential design rather than generic high-end styling
Required experience:
- Strong residential architecture experience in the UK
- Confidence in spatial planning and early-stage design thinking
- Good understanding of planning-stage and design development processes
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and pragmatically
- Strong eye for proportion, flow, and practical design logic
- Clear design sensibility and the ability to bring fresh thinking to residential briefs
Desirable:
- Experience with London homes or similar urban residential projects
- Confidence in client-facing conversations
- Interest in how projects move from concept into delivery
- ARB registration is welcome but not essential
- A strong design point of view with the confidence to bring intelligent, non-obvious ideas to the table
What Elemented offers:
- Flexible hybrid working
- Potential desk space at our Wandsworth office
- Access to live £200k - £900k+ residential projects
- Exposure to client conversations and front-end project thinking
- Paid project work where relevant
- Long-term potential if the relationship develops well
How to apply: If this feels aligned, please get in touch with a short introduction, your CV or profile, and examples of relevant residential work. We would be especially interested to see work that reflects strong spatial thinking, originality, and a distinctive residential design sensibility.
