Elementa are recruiting for a SEMH/SCLN Learning Support Assistant for this Special Provision in Taunton, that caters for children age 11-16. The children who attend the academy will have an EHCP to support their SEMH (Social Emotional Mental Health) and SCL (Speech Communication Language) needs. Your role will be to support the teaching staff, in providing a high quality provision for all young people. This can be a difficult place to work, with some children having challenging behaviour, that would need a level of experience to be able deal with the day-to-day challenges this role may bring. Previous experience of working in a specialist provision, or similar would be essential. Due to the levels of support required by the school, a DBS on the update service would be needed, as we cannot account for the delays in processing a new DBS, as this could impact on start dates, and therefore impacting the staffing levels required.

You will be a role model for the young children, providing effective educational support for staff and children within the provision.

Key duties:
  • To provide academic and pastoral support to students to enable them to overcome any barriers to achievement within their provision.
  • To liaise with teaching staff to help plan and develop appropriate resources to enable young people to fully access all activities and make good progress.
  • To liaise with support staff and teachers to share strategies for support.
  • To work as part of the team that responds to challenging behaviour.
  • To provide information, advice and structured support to enable students to make positive choices about their behaviour, attendance and social interactions.
  • To assist in developing strong links between the school and families in order to improve educational opportunities for students and to promote a positive attitude towards school.
  • To comply with confidentiality and safeguarding procedures.
  • To contribute to the monitoring, recording and analysis of the welfare and daily experiences of our young people.
  • Modelling high standards and being a positive participant in a culture of sharing good practice and all staff.
  • Contributing to the system of whole school rewards.
  • To support young people to develop a wider educational, social and cultural understanding of life.
  • To monitor the individual health needs of young people and to communicate those needs to other staff as appropriate.
