Job Overview
Location: Taunton – Pay: £20 - £24 per hour (during trial). Type: Temp - Perm. Hours: 30 per week, Monday to Friday. Start date: September 2026. This role is a 30‑hour a week, annualised hours contract, with possible additional hours during school holidays or busy maintenance periods.
Responsibilities
- Day‑to‑day management and upkeep of the school site, ensuring buildings and grounds are safe, clean and well maintained.
- Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs, including basic building maintenance, minor plumbing, decorating, carpentry and general repairs.
- Conduct regular health and safety checks, undertake risk assessments and liaise with contractors as required.
- Respond to alarm call‑outs, open and lock the school, and support school events outside normal hours.
- Maintain outdoor areas, litter picking, minor gardening, ensuring safety and presentation.
- Prioritise workloads, work independently, and use initiative to resolve maintenance issues efficiently.
Ideal Candidate
- Previous experience as a school caretaker, site supervisor, facilities assistant, maintenance operative or a similar hands‑on maintenance role.
- Good practical DIY skills, including basic building maintenance, minor plumbing, decorating, carpentry and general repairs. Basic electrical knowledge is advantageous.
- Experience maintaining school buildings and grounds.
- Good understanding of health and safety legislation, routine site inspections and risk assessments.
- Excellent communication skills to build positive relationships with staff, contractors and visitors.
- Reliable, proactive, flexible approach, pride in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities within a school setting.
Contract & Recruitment
- Recruitment partner Elementa will conduct vetting & background checks and apply for an Enhanced DBS Disclosure (chargeable @ £64.20) unless you have a current Enhanced DBS.
- Contract is PAYE – candidates are paid via PAYE unless a specific request is made.
