We are working in partnership with our client, a leading Joint Venture supporting HS2 and other key rail projects, to recruit a System Safety and Interoperability Manager to support the delivery of major UK rail infrastructure projects. This is a pivotal opportunity for an experienced Systems Engineering professional to lead safety and interoperability assurance across complex, multidisciplinary environments.
In this role, you’ll ensure all works comply with HS2 Technical Standards, statutory obligations under ROGS, the Common Safety Method on Risk Assessment (CSM-RAmeni), and National Technical Specifications Notices (NTSNs). You’ll play a central part in developing and implementing system safety management plans, coordinating assurance across design and construction, and supporting safe delivery through to final handover.
Key Responsibilities- Develop, maintain, and update plans, processes, and procedures for System Safety and Interoperability.
- Liaise with design, construction, and subcontractor teams to ensure safety assurance activities are properly planned and executed.
- Review and assess deliverables from internal and external providers for compliance, quality, and completeness.
- Deliver briefings and awareness sessions on System Safety and Interoperability practices to project and subcontractor teams.
- Support the development of project-wide competency in safety and interoperability assurance.
- Act as the primary interface for all System Safety and Interoperability matters with HS2 and appointed Independent/Notified Bodies.
- Produce and maintain reports covering progress, risks, and assurance status for senior leadership and HS2 stakeholders.
- Support the Head of Technical Assurance, Quality and Compliance in managing relationships with assurance and certification bodies.
- Integrate PRAM and CDM activities related to system safety and interoperability.
- Drive continuous improvement in technical assurance processes and systems.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent level of experience in a complex project environment.
- Significant experience in System Safety and Interoperability assurance within major railway or infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and safety standards within UK rail.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, and assurance stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to articulate complex safety and systems engineering concepts clearly.
- Broad understanding of multidisciplinary systems integration and assurance dependencies.
- Competent user of MS Office, ProjectWise, and other collaborative project management tools.
- Experience working with Independent and Notified Bodies on assurance and certification.
- Experience developing and delivering System Safety training or workshops.
- Familiarity with Technical Assurance frameworks in major rail construction programmes (e.g. HS2, Network Rail).
This is a contract role for an initial 12 months offering a competitive day rate inside IR35.
