Senior Research Scientist Location: Dorset Innovation Park, Winfrith Newburgh, Dorset Employment Type: Permanent Security Clearance: Must be eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC level) Working Pattern: Full-time, with flexibility for part-time or condensed hours considered Overview We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist to join a specialist Research & Innovation function within a high-technology engineering environment. The role supports the development of advanced technical solutions, research strategy, and project delivery across multi-disciplinary teams. You will contribute to both bidding and delivery activities, identifying opportunities to transition research into capability and applied solutions. Key Responsibilities Lead and support the technical delivery of research programmes to time, cost, and quality requirements Contribute to bid development and technical solution design Identify and support opportunities to transition research into capability and product development Provide technical leadership on multi-disciplinary research projects Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external customers to deliver technical outcomes Interpret and communicate complex analysis into clear technical advice for decision-makers Support the development of junior staff and contribute to a collaborative team environmentRequired Qualifications Degree or PhD in Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline (engineering background considered where research-focused experience is demonstrated) Strong communication skills, including presentations and stakeholder engagement Excellent written communication skills, including technical reporting and bid writing Proven ability to work effectively within a teamSkills & Experience Candidates should demonstrate experience in underwater acoustics (or similar) and one or more of the following areas, with an ability to work across disciplines: Signal processing, image analysis, or automated detection systems Statistical modelling, data science, machine learning, AI, or data visualisation Modelling of complex systems or physical phenomena Numerical simulation, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Remote sensing or ocean/environmental modelling Laboratory experimentation Technical leadership of research or engineering projects Use of scientific computing tools such as MATLAB or PythonPersonal Attributes Self-motivated and innovative thinker with a strong drive to deliver Thorough, structured, and conscientious approach to work Flexible and adaptable in a changing technical environment Proactive in developing skills and applying knowledge Able to identify broader applications of technical expertiseKey Challenges Working across multiple specialist disciplines and stakeholder groups Communicating complex technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences Translating analysis into clear, actionable insights for decision-makers Leading delivery of complex, multi-disciplinary research projects Supporting the development of junior team members Managing time effectively across competing prioritiesAdditional Information Due to the nature of our work and the projects you will be working on, all candidates must be eligible to gain security clearance.
