We are looking for a versatile and creative 3D Generalist to join our visual storytelling team at fern and Simplicissimus. In this role, you’ll be responsible for creating high-quality 3D visuals that enhance our explainers, essays, and documentary-style videos with depth, style, and narrative clarity. As a 3D Generalist, you’ll work on everything from building environments to animating characters—helping translate complex ideas into immersive visual experiences. You’ll collaborate closely with producers, editors, and motion designers to push the boundaries of what journalistic video can look like. The role will be fully remote and will be on a freelance basis. Work is expected to be available very often.
Tasks
- Create cinematic 3D animations to support and enhance editorial storytelling.
- Model, texture, and light 3D environments, props, and characters.
- Animate characters, camera movements, and dynamic sequences.
- Design and implement lighting setups for both stylized and realistic scenes.
- Composite 3D elements into final video edits, ensuring visual cohesion and quality.
- Work with the team to maintain visual consistency and meet production timelines.
Creative Collaboration
- Translate scripts and creative briefs into visual scenes and sequences.
- Collaborate with motion designers, editors, and creative leads to integrate 3D assets into mixed-asset projects.
- Contribute to the development of a unified visual language across projects.
- Bring ideas and energy to brainstorming and concept development sessions.
Requirements
- Professional proficiency in Blender (optional but valued: Unreal Engine 5).
- Strong eye for design, lighting, and visual storytelling.
- 3+ years of professional experience in 3D production (ideally in explainers, essays, or documentaries).
- Solid understanding of modeling, texturing, rigging, lighting, animation, and compositing workflows.
- Independent, reliable, and collaborative working style.
- Passionate about visual content and editorial storytelling.
- Intermediate German language skills.
