We are looking to recruit a flexible and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly team who can demonstrate a genuine interest in working in Primary Care.

Main duties of the job:

  • The role will include normal general practice duties such as phlebotomy, taking and recording BP / BMI / ECGs / 24 hour BPs, testing urine and new patient and NHS Health Checks.
  • Previous work in a hospital or GP setting is essential and knowledge of SystmOne clinical system would be advantageous, but training would be given to the successful candidate.
  • The ability to administer flu or B12 injections is desirable but not essential as training can be arranged.
  • The post holder will be a key team member contributing towards patient care and the development of the Practice.
  • Full or part time working across both Delapre Medical Centre and Whitefields Surgery between the hours of 8.00am and 6.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Job responsibilities:

  • The post holder will offer general assistance and support to the Practice Nursing Team, liaising closely with the Nursing Team Manager.
  • The HCA will be involved primarily in phlebotomy, undertaking the new patient health checks, urinalysis, ECG recording, chaperoning patients, maintaining hygiene standards, maintenance of equipment and the recording of refrigerator temperature on a daily basis, ordering of stock and restocking GPs and Nurses treatment rooms.
  • The HCA will also be responsible for documenting patient consultations on the SystmOne clinical information system in General Practice.
  • They will maintain patient confidentiality and will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Practice Nurse and within Practice Guidelines and Protocols at all times.
  • To act in such a manner as to support the client/patient at all times and be mindful of the need to reduce anxiety for the client/patient.
  • To provide a phlebotomy service for patients.
  • To be responsible for the processing and management of laboratory samples requested by the GP/Practice Nurses with specific responsibility to ensure that the samples are correctly labelled, sent to the laboratory promptly and that data is entered onto the patients computer records.
  • To assist in restocking clinical area with supplies and health promotion materials as agreed with GPs/Nursing Team and to restock all rooms as appropriate.
  • To assist in general nursing duties, under the supervision of the Practice Nursing Team, i.e. Urine testing, weight/height, blood pressure measurements, ECG recording, NHS Health Checks, spirometry, peak flow measurements and any other duties that may be assigned as necessary.
  • To act as a chaperone as required to GPs and Practice Nurses.
  • To participate in the induction programme of staff and trainees new to the practice.
  • To receive and document telephone messages as and when necessary and communicate to other members of the clinical team as appropriate.

Administration:

  • To ensure that drug/vaccine refrigerators are at the correct temperature on a daily basis and maintain the Vaccine Cold Chain documented record according to Practice Guidelines, in the absence of designated Nurse.
  • To assist colleagues restocking of all clinical areas and maintaining a stock rotation system as necessary.
  • To maintain health information notice board in line with national/local health promotion campaigns.
  • Deal with SystmOne Tasks in a prompt and timely manner.
  • To work in accordance of written protocols.
  • Any other duties requested, to help with the smooth running of the practice.

Other Tasks:

  • To function as an integral part of the Primary Health Care Team.
  • To attend relevant clinical meetings as required.
  • To report immediately to a member of the clinical staff or the Practice Manager any acts of omission or error to safeguard the interest of the patient.
  • To undertake appropriate formal training as required by the Practice.
  • Ensure building security have working knowledge of doors/windows/alarm.
  • Any other tasks allocated by managers.

Professional Development:

  • To participate in an annual individual performance review.
  • To maintain a professional development plan and submit annually.
  • To maintain own clinical development through periods of study as agreed within the contract of employment.
  • Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.
  • Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.
