At Elanco (NYSE: ELAN) – it all starts with animals! As a global leader in animal health, we are dedicated to innovation and delivering products and services to prevent and treat disease in farm animals and pets. At Elanco, we pride ourselves on fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment. We believe that diversity is the driving force behind innovation, creativity, and overall business success.

Your role: Elanco IT is evolving to meet the quickening pace of innovation, proactively partnering to create new value through innovative digital products, services, and insights for both internal business partners and external customers. As a Solution Architect supporting our Platform Engineering teams, you will provide technical thought leadership and contribute to the business vision by shaping the platforms, standards, and engineering foundations that enable teams to deliver securely, reliably, and at speed.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the technical strategic vision and roadmap for platform engineering capabilities that support both software engineering and data engineering teams.
  • Define and maintain a holistic view of Elanco’s engineering platform landscape, identifying opportunities to simplify, standardize, and scale core developer foundations.
  • Improve the developer experience by identifying friction in the engineering lifecycle and designing better workflows, tooling, and self-service capabilities across build, test, deploy, operate, and observe.
  • Create and evolve paved roads, reusable reference architectures, golden paths, templates, and engineering patterns that help teams deliver in a more consistent and efficient way.
  • Drive stronger engineering standards across the organization, with a focus on codifying best practices into tooling, pipelines, templates, policies, and reusable platform components.
  • Support the design and implementation of engineering foundations for example, but not exclusive; CI/CD, test automation, API standards, observability, secrets management, environment consistency, and policy/compliance guardrails.
  • Promote metric-driven engineering by helping define and embed measures that show whether platform investments are improving developer productivity, quality, reliability, and adoption.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to automate manual processes, reduce cognitive load for engineers, and improve the reliability and repeatability of delivery workflows.
  • Contribute directly to architecture standards and patterns that product teams can use to implement solutions appropriately and consistently.
  • Support Elanco’s AI engineering agenda by ensuring developer foundations are designed to enable engineers to work effectively with AI now and in the future.
  • Partner across software, data, and AI engineering to ensure platform decisions support future needs in areas such as data accessibility, experimentation, automation, model‑enabled workflows, and safe use of AI in engineering.
  • Work closely with Product Management to identify the most important developer pain points and prioritize platform investments that create the greatest value for engineering teams and the business.
  • Help articulate the business case for platform engineering investments by connecting technical improvements to delivery speed, quality, reuse, risk reduction, and developer effectiveness.

What You Need to Succeed (minimum qualifications):

  • B.S. in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in architecting and delivering enterprise technology solutions, with meaningful experience across software platforms, developer tooling, or engineering enablement.
  • Strong technical background from a hands‑on engineering path, with experience spanning architecture, software engineering, platform engineering, and/or data engineering.
  • Experience working with modern architecture and engineering methodologies, such as service‑oriented architecture, API‑centric design, cloud‑native patterns, CI/CD, DevSecOps, test automation, infrastructure/platform automation, and reusable engineering patterns.
  • Experience designing and improving developer‑facing platforms, standards, or engineering foundations that reduce friction and increase consistency across teams.
  • Experience working across both application/software engineering and data engineering/platform concerns, with an appreciation for how shared foundations can support both disciplines.
  • Experience in Platform Engineering, Developer Experience, Internal developer platforms or productivity programs.
  • Experience with cloud platforms, with a preference toward Microsoft Azure and/or Google Cloud.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills, with clear examples of conveying complex technical topics in a way that drove alignment and decision‑making.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority, work cross‑functionally, and translate ambitious ideas into scalable platform capabilities.

What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications):

  • Familiarity with infrastructure considerations (networking, hosting, security, etc.) in enabling on‑premise and cloud IT solutions.
  • Solution architecture certifications for Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience working in a product operating model delivering architecture capability across product.

How to prepare for a job interview at Elanco

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Elanco uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
