About Us
SONI as Transmission System Operator (TSO) is responsible for the safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity – now and in the future. We play a pivotal role in the economy of Northern Ireland, supporting competition in energy, promoting economic growth, facilitating renewable energy and providing essential services. The transmission grid delivers power from generation to industries and homes across the island, and we work closely with EirGrid & the National Energy System Operator. We operate the Single Electricity Market (SEM) and are at the forefront of innovations in the industry, transitioning towards a low‐carbon, technology‐enabled smart future.
The Team
The Operations Directorate is central to the delivery of our primary role – the operation, development and enhancement of the power system and the wholesale electricity market. SONI Operations is also responsible for the sustainable implementation of transmission system and market development to meet the future needs of all users of electricity. We offer roles in system analysis, technical policies, control‐centre readiness, grid and network code management, technical audits and compliance, and more.
System Operations Function
The core activity of SONI as the TSO for Northern Ireland is to keep the lights on through meticulous planning and engineering analysis such as load‐flow studies, in advance of and during real‐time operation. The team develops, tests and incorporates operational systems, tools, services, standards and policies required to operate the power system, integrate new technologies and manage outages, voltage control, generator testing, scheduling, risk management and alarms, ensuring the grid remains within operational security standards. They facilitate reporting, post‐event audits and the development of strategies to guarantee security of supply.
Markets, System Support and Analysis Function
This function facilitates the lifecycle of grid connections – from commissioning to decommissioning – managing tariffs, imperfections and derogations. The team oversees grid and network codes, validates plant for system services, conducts daily performance analysis of renewable and conventional units, and handles market data publication. They also execute techno‐economic modelling to evaluate operating costs, translate findings into tariffs and system charges, and provide analytical support for regulatory consultations.
