Power Systems Planning Engineer in Antrim

The Role

As a Power System Planning Engineer you will report to the Head of Networks and analyse the performance of the electricity system. You will develop and recommend solutions for future grid connections and network upgrades, support the creation of key statutory documents, and ensure planning is effective, efficient and cost‑effective.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify future power system needs and assess potential solutions using steady‑state load flow, voltage, short‑circuit and transient stability analyses.
• Appraise and recommend network reinforcement options based on technical, cost and environmental criteria.
• Conduct benefit assessments and evaluate optimal methods for connecting new generation, demand and enabling technologies.
• Write robust technical reports and governance papers and communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders.
• Maintain and update statutory documents such as the Transmission Forecast Statement and the Transmission Development Plan.
• Use power system modelling software (PSS/E, PowerFactory or similar).
• Liaise with customers and work closely with NIE Networks to deliver network reinforcement and connection solutions.
• Build strong relationships with stakeholders including NIE Networks, the Utility Regulator and relevant government departments.
• Identify and implement efficiencies in existing processes and policies.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• University degree in engineering or a comparable discipline with a minimum of 2 years post‑graduate experience.
• Desire to develop expertise in power systems studies and support a net‑zero transmission network.
• Knowledge of power system analysis methods such as steady‑state load flow, voltage and short‑circuit analysis.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and ability to work in a fast, collaborative environment.
• Capacity to work well in a team, with flexibility in approach and initiative under tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication and writing skills, able to convey technical matters to both technical and non‑technical audiences.

Desirable

• Understanding of the Northern Irish power system.
• Proficiency with PSSE and PowerFactory.
• Experience in the electricity industry or a regulated sector.
• Advanced Excel skills for data analysis.
• Python coding experience.
