We work in the transport and energy sectors, providing consultancy, engineering and operations services for clients such as major airports, governments, regulators, cities and rail and road operators.

Reporting to the M40 Structures Routine Maintenance (SRM) Lead Operative, the SRM Operative will be responsible for undertaking the routine maintenance and inspection of highway structures, including bridges, tunnels, and associated infrastructure. This role ensures that all maintenance activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with relevant regulations and standards. The role will also be responsible for supporting all operational aspects of the maintenance contract on the M40 Motorway.

Responsibilities:

  • Attendance at briefings, toolbox talks and training to enable all duties to be carried out in a safe and sustainable manner.
  • Carry out Structures Routine Maintenance works as directed by the SRM Lead Operative to a high standard and ensure all relevant paperwork is completed in a timely manner.
  • Carry out other SRM related duties as instructed by the SRM Team.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with health and safety regulations. Promote a culture of safety within the team and conduct regular safety briefings.
  • Install, maintain and remove 12D traffic management as required by the SRM Lead Operative in line with Chapter 8 specifications.
  • Ensure daily driver checks are undertaken on vehicles prior to commencing network activity.
  • Identify areas for process improvements and contribute to the development of best practice in highway structures maintenance.
  • Demonstrate and encourage a positive attitude towards health, safety, and the environment.
  • Report any hazards on site to the SRM Lead Operative for potential escalation to the Day Works Manager.
  • Adopt a proactive duty of care for own Health & Safety and that of fellow workers.
  • Understand the constraints, logistics and any site-specific requirements which will impact completion of the works.
  • Address urgent defects and participate in night operations which may require some flexibility in working hours.
  • Assist with the development of all SRM Labourers as required under the instruction of the SRM Lead Operative.
  • Keep up to date with all relevant training as required by the role and ensure any new training ideas are communicated back to the SRM Lead Operative for escalation.

What do we need from you:

  • City and Guilds Approved Chainsaw Maintenance qualification.
  • City and Guilds Approved Chainsaw use qualification (up to 200mm diameter trees).
  • City and Guilds NPTC assessed.
  • Lantra Approved pole pruner qualification.
  • Approved qualification in Safe Working Near water.
  • NPORS/IPAF Approved Mobile Elevated working platform qualification.
  • Approved woodchipper qualification.
  • Approved safe use of strimming equipment qualification.
  • Lantra Approved M1 & M2 NHSS 12D qualification.
  • City and Guilds Approved safe use of pesticides qualification.
  • First aid at work +F qualification.
  • Previous experience of undertaking Structures Routine Maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of UK highways regulations and maintenance standards.
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations including those related to highway structures.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Previous experience of working on a high-speed road would be advantageous.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools for data collection and reporting (e.g., tablets, inspection software).
  • Self-motivation with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
