Project Description
Supplementing Northern Powergrid’s (NPg) capability, the successful individual will support and work with the NPg inhouse project delivery to provide works across several asset classes to include substations, underground cables, overhead lines and civils. This will cover at all system voltages from low voltage (LV) up to and including 132kV.
The Opportunity
As a Senior Project Engineer / Manager (10+ years’ experience), you will design, plan and deliver NPg project works from feasibility through to completion, ensuring compliance with NPg standards, systems and licence obligations.
Responsibilities
- Use and comply with NPg procedures, business systems and data/asset systems.
- Undertake site investigations and develop compliant engineering solutions and designs.
- Produce firm cost proposals, quotations, and validated estimates for connection offers.
- Specify, order and manage equipment, plant and supplier/contractor interfaces.
- Review designs, ICP submissions and supplier tenders; attend FAT and witness testing.
- Project manage works (whole or part lifecycle) to time, cost and quality targets.
- Administer contracts, tenders, mobilisation and ongoing contract management.
- Develop and manage programmes, providing regular progress and cost forecasts to NPg.
- Lead project teams and meetings; manage stakeholders and customer engagement.
- Ensure delivery meets NPg quality, safety (including CDM duties), and environmental standards.
- Undertake audits, site inspections and contribute to NPg audit programmes.
- Identify and manage project risks and resource requirements.
- Maintain NPg operational authorisations for substation access and supervision.
- Update NPg asset records and support portfolio resource planning.
What do we need from you
Knowledge & Qualifications
- Proven track record in the electricity distribution and/or transmission industry, delivering Project Engineer activities with typically 5+ years’ experience.
- Strong technical knowledge across all distribution asset classes (cables, overhead lines, substations and civils), with the competence to take responsibility for works from LV up to and including 66kV.
- Demonstrable experience managing both major projects and high-volume workstreams, including responsibility for projects typically valued in excess of £5m.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering preferred; HNC or equivalent qualifications will also be considered.
- NEBOSH or equivalent qualification in safety management.
- Experience working on CDM notifiable projects.

This is a hybrid role, involving a blend of home working, time spent at NPg and Omnia Projects offices, and regular site visits across the North East region. Key office locations include: Northern Powergrid: Newcastle, Sunderland, York, Castleford, Hull, Sheffield Omnia Projects: Northallerton. These are long-term roles. Engagement can be on a PAYE, Limited Company (Inside IR35) or contingent worker basis.
