The Commercial Lawyer will be responsible for providing pragmatic legal support across BT’s consumer channels, covering all key routes to market. This role involves interpreting and advising on a wide range of commercial contracts, working closely with stakeholders to manage legal risk, and enabling day‑to‑day operational decisions while safeguarding BT’s commercial and regulatory position.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide day‑to‑day commercial legal advice to the Consumer unit across multiple sales channels, including retail stores (owned and franchised), field sales, contact centres and digital.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts with third‑party partners (for example franchisees, field sales providers, contact centre outsourcers, Pay‑As‑You‑Go distributors, comparison sites and other commercial partners).
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with key business stakeholders, developing an in‑depth understanding of their objectives, risks and commercial drivers.
  • Interpret existing contracts and provide clear, practical in‑life advice to help stakeholders manage issues, changes and disputes.
  • Support new business and channel initiatives by identifying legal risks and proposing pragmatic, commercial solutions that enable growth while protecting BT’s interests.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the wider legal team to ensure a consistent approach to contracting, risk management and governance across Consumer.
  • Keep up to date with relevant legal and regulatory developments affecting consumer channels and reflect these in advice, templates and ways of working.

Skills And Experiences

  • Qualified solicitor with a Bachelor's degree in Law (or equivalent legal qualification).
  • 2–5 years’ post‑qualification experience (PQE) in commercial, contracts or business law (private practice and/or in‑house).
  • Experience advising on, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, ideally including contracts with third‑party providers, franchise or channel partners, and/or outsourced service providers.
  • Ability to build strong, trusted relationships with business stakeholders, quickly understand their commercial drivers, and provide clear, pragmatic in‑life legal advice.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with sound legal judgement and the ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives.
