We are hiring a Technical SEO Specialist to work on a live, growing directory website built with Next.js. This is not a basic SEO role. The website already receives traffic and rankings — the focus is on technical SEO, structure, and scaling location-based pages across the UK.
About the Project
We operate a location-based directory platform targeting UK cities (e.g. Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Chesterfield, etc.). The site is scaling quickly, and we need someone who can fix structural SEO issues and build a system that supports long-term growth across 50+ cities.
Key Challenges
- Tag pages currently ranking instead of main city pages
- Duplicate content and canonical conflicts
- Large number of “crawled but not indexed” pages
- Scaling SEO across many city pages
- Improving internal linking between locations
- Ensuring a clean, long-term SEO structure
Responsibilities
- Perform a real technical SEO audit (not generic reports)
- Fix duplicate URL structures and canonical issues
- Implement proper redirect strategy (tag pages → main city pages)
- Improve crawl efficiency and indexation
- Optimise city pages for rankings (without keyword stuffing)
- Build scalable SEO structure for future city expansion
- Design internal linking strategy between locations
- Work alongside developer (Next.js environment)
Requirements
- Strong experience in technical SEO
- Experience with directory / marketplace / location-based SEO
- Deep understanding of:
- canonical tags
- crawl/index issues
- URL structures
- Google Search Console
- Ability to provide solutions, not just reports
Not Suitable If You
- Focus mainly on backlinks or link packages
- Use outdated SEO methods (web 2.0, directory submissions, etc.)
- Provide generic SEO audits without clear actions
What Success Looks Like
- Main city pages ranking (not tag pages)
- Improved indexing across the site
- Stronger rankings across UK city keywords
- Clean, scalable SEO structure
To Apply
Please answer:
- How would you fix tag pages ranking instead of main pages?
- What would your first 5 days look like on this site?
- Have you worked on a directory or location-based SEO project before?
This can become an ongoing role if results are strong.
