Not your average US law firm in London, a true leader in Europe (with a global coverage) with a refreshingly unorthodox approach to recruitment. The global finance team is keen to expand the finance practice with a dynamic and accretive lawyer or team. Finance has always been a mainstay of the London office but with some recent lawyer retirements and one departure the team is ‘a bit light’. Clearly time to rebuild but this has also provided a catalyst for thoughts on strategy and reshaping the London finance offering.

There is a dedicated finance team of ‘specialists’, each lawyer has the ability to lend a hand on general banking and corporate lending but there is a clear gap. There are a number of referrals (both borrower and lender) coming through the global network which are being governed by UK law. However, the firm is not looking for a pure service partner, there will be a workflow, but a successful hire will need to demonstrate ambition and drive to suit the culture of the firm.

Ultimately the finance team will advise both financiers and corporates on the full range of transactions, increasingly with a complex cross-border component. A cultural fit is very important, it is quite informal, non-hierarchical, and collaborative in London. The London partners are entrepreneurial but properly supported by the wider firm. The culture will not be for everyone, it is quite different than many London-based firms as it still has the feeling of ‘a start-up challenger firm established in the 1980s’.

In terms of global hierarchy, the wider firm does have an ‘intimate’ management team which is heavily invested in London.
