A leading Derby-based organisation is seeking a Head of Operational Safety & Compliance to oversee safety governance, operational standards, and compliance across a complex, safety-critical environment. This is a leadership role for an experienced operational safety professional who can influence at all levels, shape risk strategy, and ensure the organisation meets industry and legislative requirements.
You’ll provide authoritative guidance on operational safety, lead assurance programmes, and act as the professional head for operational standards — ensuring the Safety Management System (SMS) remains robust, compliant, and reflective of best practice.
Responsibilities:
- Operational Safety Leadership - Provide expert guidance on operational safety, risk validation, and change management.
- SMS Governance - Act as custodian of operational procedures, ensuring SMS content is accurate, compliant, and updated in line with legislation and industry standards.
- Audit & Assurance Oversight - Lead operational audits and risk assurance programmes, identifying non-compliance and driving corrective actions.
- Compliance Management - Maintain and update the compliance register, ensuring changes are communicated and embedded across operational teams.
- Industry Representation - Represent the organisation at key industry and Network Rail interface meetings, ensuring emerging risks and opportunities are understood and acted upon.
- Operational Standards Expertise - Provide technical standards support to safety teams and contribute to safety improvement initiatives.
Requirements:
- Significant experience in operational safety leadership within the rail sector
- A working knowledge of operational change and risk management
- Excellent communication skills, with confidence engaging at all organisational levels
- Thorough knowledge of industry standards, legislation, and operational compliance frameworks
- Level 6 Occupational Health & Safety qualification (or equivalent experience).
