Overall job purpose

The School Support Officer (Welsh Language and Literacy) works in partnership with the Learning Service's senior leadership team to provide guidance across the primary and secondary sectors on Anglesey.

Directly accountable to the Senior Manager (lead officer for WESP), the postholder acts as a Literacy Pedagogy and School Support Officer alongside being a subject specialist for the Welsh language.

The core purpose of the role is to lead educational improvement and raise standards in Welsh and cross-curricular literacy within the Languages, Literacy and Communication Area of Learning and Experience.

They will also be expected to foster a culture of schools that self‑improve and collaborate across all settings. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading specific outcomes of the Welsh in Education Strategic Plan 2022-2032.

In addition, the role is responsible for establishing data collection systems, monitoring progress, and formally reporting on Welsh language standards, covering reading, writing and oracy skills across all schools within the local authority.

It is also responsible for leading and supporting the self‑improvement processes and procedures of the schools and language centres in accordance with responsibilities for the Welsh language and literacy.

Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver and support individual school development plans in line with responsibilities for Welsh and literacy, including reporting on the quality of teaching and pupil attainment, and ensuring equal opportunities for all.

Support and lead schools in implementing the immersion and language acquisition programme for pupils on Anglesey, and support immersion pedagogy for Foundation Learning, Progression Step 1 through to Progression Step 4 across Anglesey's primary and secondary schools.
