We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Welding Technician to join our dynamic Engineering Department at Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion. This role is essential for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of our welding workshops at the Graig Campus. This position plays a crucial role in providing high-quality technical assistance to students and academic staff during practical teaching sessions. You will have primary responsibility for workshop housekeeping, health and safety compliance, and the maintenance of specialist equipment, including MIG, TIG, MMA, and oxy-acetylene tools.
Working closely with the Head of Curriculum, course leaders, and lecturing staff, you will support communication and ensure that all workshop-based activities are delivered effectively and safely. Your work will help maintain a clean, organised learning environment where statutory health and safety processes—such as Risk Assessments and COSHH records—are followed meticulously. The role sits within the Engineering Department and involves a wide range of technical duties, from metal preparation using guillotines and plasma cutters to managing stores inventory and ordering consumables.

Key Responsibilities- Provide technical assistance and support for teaching and learning within your area, responding to the needs of students, academic staff and the relevant course leader/s;
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment within welding workshops, complying with Health and Safety regulations;
- Prepare, maintain and update relevant Health & Safety documentation such as Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work, COSHH records and equipment maintenance records, in liaison with course teams;
- Maintain and service welding equipment, including MIG, TIG, MMA and oxy-acetylene equipment;
- Ensure the care, control, maintenance and security of course equipment, materials and stock with tools and equipment being stored away after each session;
- Maintain stores inventory for consumables, equipment and delivery resources;
- Carry out ordering of stock in line with college financial procedures and update online ordering database;
- Prepare metal materials in an accurate and safe manner, operating various cutting machines including guillotines, band saws, and plasma cutters;
- Participate in course team; student consultative committees; and curriculum area meetings as required;
- Carry out duties which support marketing and promotion of the course programme;
- Support lecturers and students in undertaking workshop-based activities, in line with agreed timetable.
- Welsh Language Requirements: Welsh Oracy (Listening/Speaking) - Level 2; Welsh Literacy (Writing/Reading) - Level 2.
- Essential Criteria:
- Relevant vocational qualification in welding or related engineering discipline;
- GCSE English and Maths at a minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent;
- IOSH Managing Safely (If you are not IOSH qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible);
- Appropriate Health & Safety training (or willingness to undertake appropriate training);
- First Aid qualification (If you are not First Aid qualified, you will be expected to undertake training as soon as possible);
- Recent and relevant experience of the technical field/s concerned;
- A good understanding of the technical support role in Further & Higher Education;
- Be competent in the use of welding and cutting machinery;
- Good communicator with diplomacy and tact;
- Good interpersonal and organisational skills;
- Ability to work harmoniously with students and colleagues;
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines;
- Ability to work flexibly.
- You will receive 28 days holiday, plus bank holidays and five closure days which totals at 41 days holiday per year. You also receive an additional 4 days after 5 years service.
