The post of Lecturer in Essential Skills and GCSE Maths is important for the future of the College. In this regard, we seek to appoint an individual with the necessary passion, enthusiasm and commitment to ensure that the highest standards are achieved in this discipline.

The appointment is for a temporary lecturer to join our Skills Team to deliver Essential Skills and GCSE Maths to 16-18 learners on full-time college programmes and part-time learners attending GCSE evening classes.

We seek an enthusiastic and determined English teacher to ensure learners are engaged with the subject and prepared for assessment. A degree in Maths (or a related subject) is essential, as is a minimum of Level 2 in English . Experience in a similar environment, as well as qualified teaching status, would be preferred.

You will need exceptional communication skills and the ability to prioritise a challenging workload.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake the planning, teaching, assessment and coordination of programmes of study leading to qualifications within Essential Skills Wales and GCSE Maths.
  • Be a member of the Skills Team and work with colleagues to ensure the quality of the Essential Skills Wales and GCSE Mathsat the College.
  • Work with the Head of Lifelong Learning to implement the best teaching and learning practices in line with the Literacy strategies of the College.
  • Carry out any other duties as directed by the Principal/Chief Executive commensurate with the grade of the post at the initial place of work or other locations within the College.

Skills Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential Criteria:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification
  • Teaching qualification (If you are not in possession of a teaching qualification as at the date of employment, you will be required to obtain a PGCE within 2 years of this date)
  • GCSE English at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • GCSE Mathematics at minimum Grade C or O Level equivalent
  • Documented evidence of appropriate Professional Development
  • Good literacy/numeracy/digital literacy skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with learners and colleagues
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Excellent punctuality and ability to work flexibly

Desirable Criteria:

  • Relevant teaching experience
  • A good understanding of relevant issues in post 16 education
  • A proven track record of high levels of learner attainment
  • Awareness of key performance indicators
  • Evidence of innovative teaching and learning activities
  • Evidence of effective tracking and monitoring of learner performance
  • Experience of actively participating in the pastoral care of young people
