The Role

The successful candidate will fulfil three interconnected responsibilities:

  • Class Teacher
    • Deliver high-quality, inclusive teaching to learners within the 14–19 age range, meeting a wide range of additional learning needs.
    • Create a structured, purposeful and aspirational learning environment that supports wellbeing, communication, independence and preparation for adulthood.
    • Use person-centred approaches, effective assessment and adaptive pedagogy to support learner progress and outcomes.
  • 14–19 Department Leader
    • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the 14–19 department across the school.
    • Lead the development of inclusive and aspirational curriculum pathways, including accreditation, qualifications and non-qualification routes, in line with the Curriculum for Wales and ALN reform.
    • Oversee assessment, progression and reporting for learners aged 14–19.
    • Ensure effective transition planning into post-16 and post-19 destinations, working closely with families and external partners.
    • Support and develop colleagues working within the 14–19 phase.
    • Monitor standards, contribute to self-evaluation and drive continuous improvement within the department.
  • Designated AoLE Lead
    • Lead a specified Area of Learning and Experience, reflecting the post-holder’s expertise.
    • Oversee curriculum design, progression and assessment within the AoLE across relevant age ranges.
    • Support and mentor colleagues to develop confidence and consistency within the AoLE.
    • Ensure AoLE provision is inclusive, coherent and responsive to the needs of learners with ALN.

In addition, the post-holder will:

  • Work collaboratively with senior leaders, ALN specialists, careers services and external agencies.
  • Contribute to whole-school development, planning and evaluation as part of the school’s founding leadership team.

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Is an excellent classroom practitioner with experience of teaching learners with ALN.
  • Has a strong understanding of post-14 education, progression routes, accreditation and preparation for adulthood.
  • Demonstrates a secure understanding of the Curriculum for Wales, ALN reform and progression frameworks.
  • Has leadership experience or clear leadership potential.
  • Is committed to inclusive, person-centred and trauma-informed practice.
  • Has the vision, creativity and resilience to help establish a new school.
  • Can build strong, positive relationships with learners, families, staff and professionals.
