SEMH Teacher - Northumberland (Temp to Perm) in North East

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teacher to join a supportive and inclusive educational setting in Northumberland. As an SEMH Teacher, you will play a vital role in creating a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment where pupils can build confidence, develop positive relationships, and re‑engage with education. The successful SEMH Teacher will be an experienced SEMH specialist with a proven ability to support pupils with complex social, emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs while delivering high‑quality teaching tailored to individual learning requirements. This role is initially offered on a temporary basis; however, there is potential for the position to become permanent after January for the right candidate, making it an excellent opportunity for an experienced SEMH Teacher seeking long‑term career progression within a supportive setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the needs of pupils with SEMH needs.
• Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment where pupils can thrive.
• Develop positive relationships with pupils to encourage engagement, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.
• Implement effective behaviour management strategies and support pupils with emotional regulation.
• Adapt teaching approaches and resources to meet individual learning needs and abilities.
• Assess, monitor, and track pupil progress, using assessment to inform planning and intervention.
• Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral staff, SENCOs, parents, and external agencies.
• Support pupils in developing social skills, resilience, independence, and positive coping strategies.
• Contribute to individual support plans, reviews, and reports where required.
• Ensure safeguarding procedures and school policies are followed at all times.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential.
• Significant experience as an SEMH specialist, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs – essential.
• Experience working with pupils who present challenging behaviour and barriers to learning.
• Strong behaviour management skills and the ability to build positive relationships with challenging learners.
• Excellent communication, organisation, and classroom management skills.
• A patient, resilient, and adaptable approach to teaching and learning.
• A strong understanding of trauma‑informed practice, restorative approaches, and strategies to support emotional regulation.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

This role would suit an experienced SEMH Teacher who combines strong classroom practice with specialist SEMH knowledge and a passion for helping vulnerable young people succeed.
