How to prepare for a job interview at education personnel

Know Your SEND Stuff

Make sure you brush up on your knowledge of Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). Be ready to discuss your experience in these areas and how you've supported students in the past. This shows you're not just qualified, but genuinely passionate about making a difference.

Showcase Your Communication Skills

Since communication is key in a SEND role, be prepared to talk about any training you've had, like Makaton or PECS. Share specific examples of how you've used these strategies to help students communicate better. This will highlight your ability to adapt and support individual needs.

Demonstrate Your Nurturing Approach

During the interview, convey your calm and patient nature. Use examples from your experience where you've successfully managed challenging behaviours or supported emotional regulation. This will reassure them that you can create a supportive environment for their pupils.

Ask Thoughtful Questions

Prepare some questions about the school's approach to SEND education and how they support their staff. This shows your interest in the role and helps you gauge if it's the right fit for you. Plus, it gives you a chance to demonstrate your commitment to professional development.
