About The Candidate

We are seeking an Apprenticeships Programme Lead for English and maths who combines strong interpersonal skills with a genuine passion for supporting apprentice success in English and maths. The ideal candidate will demonstrate empathy, resilience and excellent communication, enabling them to engage and motivate diverse apprentices while building trust with colleagues and employers. They will be collaborative and inclusive in their approach, valuing different perspectives and fostering a supportive team culture that drives high-quality delivery.

About The Role

The Apprenticeships Programme Lead for English and maths will play a pivotal role in ensuring high-quality, compliant delivery that supports apprentices to achieve and progress. The role involves leading the design and delivery of engaging Functional Skills provision that meets current standards and aligns with apprenticeship requirements. Working collaboratively with Apprenticeship Operations teams and employers, the Apprenticeships Programme Lead will ensure that English and maths expectations are clearly understood and effectively embedded within programmes, providing expert guidance on assessment, teaching strategies and apprentice progression. They will contribute to continuous quality improvement through sharing best practice, supporting standardisation and championing effective English and maths pedagogy. The role also carries responsibility for ensuring apprentices receive high-quality information, advice and guidance in English and maths, supporting recruitment, retention and achievement, and enabling all apprentices to reach their full potential.

Role Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the Functional Skills element of apprenticeship programmes is current, compliant and delivered in a way that supports apprentices’ progression and success.
  • Work collaboratively with Apprenticeship Operations Management and employers to ensure that Functional Skills requirements are embedded and understood, offering specialist guidance on assessment standards, learning strategies, and apprenticeship expectations.
  • Support quality improvement through contributing specialist expertise, participating in standardisation, and sharing Functional Skills pedagogy and best practice.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring high quality information, advice and guidance in English and maths, and support recruitment, retention and achievement of individual apprentices.
  • Take responsibility for following up issues or concerns, for example, behaviour, attendance or well-being and lead on the required action/s or interventions to address these in conjunction with other internal staff or external agencies where necessary.

Qualifications

  • Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or equivalent, or commitment to complete within the first two years.
  • Level 3 Assessor qualification, or commitment to complete.
  • Level 4 Quality Assurance qualification, or commitment to complete.
  • Minimum Level 3 qualification in both subject specialisms or minimum level 3 qualification in either English or maths.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Experience of working within Apprenticeships in the FE sector or with a training provider.
  • Proven experience delivering Functional Skills English and maths.
  • Experience contributing to internal quality assurance processes (e.g. internal verification, speaking and listening assessment, E1–E3 assessment).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with learners and colleagues to review progress and support achievement of learning and personal development goals.
  • Experience of taking ownership and accountability for projects or learner progress.
  • Skilled in delivering safe, inclusive, engaging and appropriately challenging learning sessions.
  • Experience of creating inclusive learning environments, with an understanding of supporting learners with SEND or additional needs.
  • Competence in using a range of assessment methods, including initial and diagnostic, formative and summative assessment.
