EFI Group has a bold mission to transform lives, careers and industries through pioneering, industry-led education in fashion, beauty and apprenticeships. Our vision is to deliver exceptional learning experiences, driven by innovation, inclusion, employability, and excellence.
About the role
The Academic Coach and Mentor will report into the Programme Manager: Coaching and Mentoring and will be a member of the EFI Group Academic Coaching Team. The post works across EFI Group but will be based predominantly at LCBT, liaising closely with the LCBT Curriculum Teams to provide day-to-day, subject-specific academic coaching and signposting. The Coach will be responsible for delivering the best possible student experience and outcomes, particularly for identified groups of learners (groups may include: a Beauty, Hair or Make-Up cohort; learners at risk of not passing their knowledge tests; at risk students; vulnerable students).
A key focus of the role is preparing learners for their City & Guilds EVolve online knowledge tests. The Coach will work alongside lecturers to reinforce underpinning theory, build learners’ confidence and exam technique, and track test readiness so that learners achieve first time and progress on to their next step.
The post holder will be personable, highly compassionate, organised and genuinely interested in education and wellbeing, with the subject knowledge to coach learners through the technical content of Hair and Beauty programmes. This role’s purpose is to ensure all students (primarily identified students in Further Education), including the most vulnerable, make excellent progress both academically and with their social and emotional development.
About you
Experience: Relevant industry experience and experience in coaching, mentoring or providing academic support. Experience of working directly with students to support their learning and progress, with demonstrable positive outcomes. Experience of preparing learners for externally set tests or examinations, supporting inspection readiness and maintaining appropriate records and documentation.
Expertise: Knowledge of current Post-16 education, including relevant policies, practices, teaching methods, processes and pedagogy. Strong subject knowledge across Hair and/or Beauty, including underpinning theory. Knowledge of awarding body assessment requirements, ideally including City & Guilds EVolve online tests, and external agency provision for vulnerable learners and those requiring additional support. Commitment to keeping knowledge up to date within the relevant subject area and Post-16 education.
Skills: Excellent planning, organisational and administrative skills, including managing competing priorities. Effective communication and listening skills, with the ability to explain technical content clearly and accessibly. Strong coaching and mentoring skills. Good IT and digital skills, including confidence using online assessment platforms. An inquisitive and supportive approach to individualised learner support, with the ability to problem-solve creatively and adapt support to individual needs.
Values: Commitment to upholding and modelling the EFI Group’s values.
