JOB TITLE: Teacher – Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS

1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

  • (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where he/she may be required to work.

2) Exercise of particular duties

(a) Teachers (excluding principals) shall perform duties as reasonably directed by the principal;

(b) Teachers employed by a board shall perform duties as reasonably directed by the board or principal of the school where they work.

3. Responsibilities

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ development and progress;

4. General duties

  • Promoting pupils’ progress and well-being;
  • Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, and career matters;
  • Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs;
  • Communicating with parents and outside agencies;
  • Participating in relevant meetings.

5. Assessment/Reporting

Contributing to assessments, reports, and references for pupils, while maintaining professional integrity.

6. Staff Development

  • Participating in staff development schemes;
  • Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes;
  • Contributing to curriculum and pastoral development.

7. Discipline/Health and Safety

  • Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety;
  • Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and administration.

8. Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, and supervising during exams.

9. Management and Administration

  • Contributing to recruitment and professional development of staff;
  • Managing work of other teachers;
  • Participating in curriculum, organizational, and pastoral activities;
  • Handling administrative tasks and support staff supervision;
  • Attending assemblies, registering attendance, and supervising pupils.

10. Working Hours

  • Full-time teachers are available for 195 days per year, with specific hours and break requirements;

11. Cover Responsibilities

Supervising pupils during teacher absences, with specific rules based on school size and teacher absence duration.

Section 1 – Essential Criteria

  • Qualification to teach in Northern Ireland; registered with GTCNI;
  • Experience teaching P4 and/or P5 with positive outcomes;
  • Experience supporting diverse learners, including those with SEN;
  • Experience using digital media/technology in teaching.

Section 2 – Additional Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding policies, SEND Code of Practice, assessment methods, and IT systems;
  • Effective teaching, classroom management, inclusive environment creation, teamwork, and communication skills;
  • Alignment with the school’s values and ethos.

Section 3 – Desirable Criteria

  • Experience teaching a composite class and at least 6 months of teaching practice.
