PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
1) Exercise of general professional duties
- A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
- if he/she is employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school;
- if he/she is employed by a board on terms under which he is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher.
2) Exercise of particular duties
- A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with any directions which may be reasonably given to him/her by the principal from time to time, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
- A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) refers shall perform, in accordance with any direction which may reasonably be given to him/her from time to time by the board or by the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
Responsibilities
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work.
- Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
- Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group.
- Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters, further education and careers.
- Making records of and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs where appropriate.
- Communicating and consulting with parents of pupils.
- Communicating and cooperating with persons or bodies outside the school as approved by the employer and the Board of Governors.
- Participating in meetings related to the purposes described above.
- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils and groups.
- Participating in staff development and performance reviews, reviewing teaching methods and programmes, further training.
- Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on the development of courses, materials, programmes, teaching methods and assessment.
- Maintaining good order, discipline, safeguarding health and safety of pupils.
- Participating in meetings on curriculum, administration, pastoral arrangements.
- Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations.
- Contributing to selection, professional development and induction of other teachers.
- Coordinating or managing the work of other teachers and supervising support staff.
- Attending assemblies (subject to Article 22).
- Registering attendance of pupils.
Number of days/hours of work:
- A full-time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days a year, not more than 190 days teaching.
- 1,265 hours a year for non-residential teachers.
- Other duties as specified by the Principal.

SECTION 1 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
- Qualifications must be obtained by the closing date for completed applications.
- Hold a teaching qualification recognised by the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland.
- Hold a degree prepared to teach English as the main subject.
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year paid demonstrable experience teaching English at Key Stage 3 to achieve positive outcomes.
- Demonstrable experience using a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ needs.
- Demonstrable experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Other:
- Pre-employment check.
SECTION 2 – ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Knowledge and skills assessed during interview.
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
- Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
- Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
- Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ needs.
- Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools and tablet/mobile technologies.
- Knowledge of current assessment methods.
Skills / Abilities:
- Effective teaching and classroom management skills.
- Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents and community.
- Ability to work as an effective member of a team, motivate self and others.
Values and orientation:
- Evidence of how experience reflects the school’s values/ethos.
SECTION 3 – DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- Demonstrable experience assisting with the delivery of sports in a school environment.
- Demonstrable experience or willingness to assist with extra-curricular activities such as debating club.
