JOB TITLE: Teacher – Post-Primary

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER
Under the Teachers\’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5, a teacher shall perform general professional duties and any particular duties as reasonably directed by the Principal or by the employing board when not assigned to a single school. The duties include planning, teaching, assessment, pupil welfare, communication with parents and external bodies, staff development, and involvement in school administration and pastoral arrangements.
- 1. Planning
- 1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
- 1.2 Teaching, according to pupils\’ educational needs, including setting and marking work in school and elsewhere;
- 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
- 2. General
- 2.1 Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and of any class or group;
- 2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, further education and careers, including sources of advice and recording/reporting;
- 2.3 Making records of and reports on personal and social needs of pupils (where appropriate);
- 2.4 Communicating with and consulting parents;
- 2.5 Communicating and cooperating with external bodies approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors;

- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils, as appropriate.

- Qualifications/ Professional Membership
- Hold a teaching qualification appropriate for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland
- Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach English as the main subject
- Experience
- Minimum of 1 year’s demonstrable experience of teaching English at Key Stage 3 and 4 with positive learning outcomes
- Experience using a range of teaching strategies and digital media/technology to enhance learning
- Other
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post
SECTION 2 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
The following essential criteria will be measured during interview/selection.
- Knowledge
- Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding and child protection, the SEND Code of Practice, IT systems and digital tools, assessment methods
- Skills / Abilities
- Effective teaching and classroom management, inclusive learning environment, collaborative work with pupils, colleagues, parents and wider community
- Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos

SECTION 3 – DESIRABLE CRITERIA

- Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching English at Key Stage 3 and 4
- Experience using varied classroom approaches to support and challenge all abilities, including those with SEN
- Experience monitoring pupil progress, target setting and intervention
