JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher

  1. Exercise of general professional duties: A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including being directed by the principal or by the employing board as applicable.
  2. Exercise of particular duties: A teacher shall perform, in accordance with reasonable directions, such particular duties as may be assigned. This includes duties as may be directed by the principal, the board, or any school where the teacher may be required to work.
  1. Planning: Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to pupils’ educational needs; setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on development and attainment of pupils.
  2. General: Promote the general progress and well-being of pupils; provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters; make relevant records and reports; communicate with parents and with external bodies as approved; participate in meetings.
  3. Assessment/Reporting: Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils as appropriate.
  4. Staff Development/Professional Development: Participate in staff development and performance review; review methods and programmes; participate in further training and development; advise and cooperate on curriculum, teaching materials, and pastoral arrangements.
  5. Discipline/Health and Safety: Maintain good order and discipline; safeguard health and safety on school premises and during authorised activities; participate in curriculum and administration meetings including pastoral arrangements.
  6. Public Examinations: Assist in preparing pupils for public examinations and in assessment and reporting; participate in arrangements for pupils’ presentation for and supervision during examinations.
  7. Review and Development of Management/Administration: Contribute to selection and professional development of other teachers; coordinate or manage work of other teachers; participate in curriculum, organisation and pastoral development; assist with administrative and organisational tasks and equipment management.
  8. Number of days/hours of work: Availability for work on 195 days per year, compensation for duties and hours as specified by the Principal or employing board; adhere to maximum teaching hours per week; ensure breaks between hours; observe year and week definitions; mid-day supervision as applicable.
  9. Staff cover: Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable, subject to local policies on cover.

  • Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach Home Economics as the main subject.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 months experience (including teaching practice) of teaching Home Economics at Key Stage 3 with positive outcomes; minimum of 3 months experience (including teaching practice) of teaching Food and Nutrition at Key Stage 4 with positive outcomes.
  • Other: Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

Section 2 – Essential Criteria

The following essential criteria will be measured during the interview/selection stage:

  • Knowledge: Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policy/practice; SEND Code of Practice; a range of teaching strategies; information technology and digital classroom tools; current assessment methods.
  • Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; ability to provide a supportive inclusive learning environment; ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents and the community; ability to work as a team and motivate self and others.
  • Values Orientation/Identification with School Ethos: Evidence of alignment with the school’s values and ethos.

  • Ability to teach Hospitality (for remainder of 2025-2026), Health & Social Care, and Child Development.
