Responsibilities

  • Professional duties – The teacher shall carry out professional duties as circumstances require under the direction of the principal and the employing authority in accordance with applicable regulations. This includes planning, teaching, assessment, reporting and other duties as specified in the regulations.
  • Planning – Planning and preparing courses and lessons. Teaching according to pupils' educational needs, including setting and marking work. Assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment of pupils.
  • General – Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and class/group. Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters including future careers. Maintaining records and reports on personal and social needs of pupils where appropriate. Communicating with parents and with other persons or bodies outside the school as approved. Participating in meetings as described above.
  • Assessment/Reporting – Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils as appropriate.
  • Staff Development/Professional Development – Participating in staff development and performance review if required. Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; pursuing further training and professional development. Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum development, teaching materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Discipline/Health and Safety – Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety. Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.
  • Public Examinations – Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and related assessments and supervision during examinations.
  • Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration – Contributing to selection for appointment and professional development of other teachers; induction and assessment of probationary teachers. Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers. Participating in review, development and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions. Participating in administrative and organisational tasks including supervision of support staff and equipment/materials management. Attending assemblies, registering attendance and supervising pupils as appropriate.
  • Number of days/Hours of work – Full-time and related terms regarding days, hours, breaks and statutory definitions.
  • Staff cover – Providing supervision or teaching coverage for absent teachers under defined conditions.
  • This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and is provided as a guideline within which the individual works. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.
  • In accordance with the Northern Ireland Act (1998), the post-holder is expected to promote good relations and equality of opportunity at all times.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications/ Professional Membership – Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Experience – Minimum of 4 months’ paid experience teaching primary aged children; demonstrable experience of using a range of classroom strategies; experience with the use of digital media/technology.
  • Other – Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

Knowledge – Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection; SEND Code of Practice; teaching strategies; IT systems and digital tools; current assessment methods.

Skills / Abilities – Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; initiative; collaboration with pupils, parents and colleagues; teamwork; motivation.

Values Orientation – Demonstrated alignment with the School’s Values/ethos.

Desirable Criteria – Experience monitoring pupil progress, contributing to curriculum areas (ICT, WAU or The Arts), involvement with Music or sport, nurture approaches and Calm Plan training.

Disclosure of Criminal Background – The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity with children. If recommended for appointment to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be undertaken. You will be expected to meet the cost of the Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.
