Responsibilities
- Exercise of general professional duties: A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, including working under the reasonable direction of the principal of the school or under the reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school in which they may be required to work.
- Exercise of particular duties: A teacher shall perform, in accordance with directions reasonably given by the principal or by the board or the principal of any school in which they may work, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned.
- Planning and assessment: Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to pupils' educational needs; setting and marking work; assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment of pupils.
- General duties: Promote the general progress and well-being of pupils; provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters; maintain records and reports on pupils' needs; communicate with parents and other bodies; participate in meetings.
- Assessment/Reporting: Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils.
- Staff Development/Professional Development: Participate in staff development and performance review; review teaching methods and participate in further training; advise and cooperate on course development, teaching materials and pastoral arrangements.
- Discipline/Health and Safety: Maintain order and safety; participate in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements.
- Public Examinations: Participate in preparing pupils for public examinations and in related assessments and supervision.
- Management/Administration: Contribute to selection and development of teachers; coordinate or manage teaching staff; participate in curriculum and pastoral development; administrative tasks including resource management and attendance/assemblies.
- Hours of work: Standards for days and hours; break requirements; definitions of year and week; other related conditions.
- Staff cover: Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable under defined conditions.

Section 1 – Essential Criteria
- Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification that meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification suitable for teaching Drama/Performing Arts as the main subject; be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
- Experience: Have teaching experience or practice in teaching Drama/Performing Arts or other relevant subject at GCSE/Level 2.
- Knowledge: Demonstrate current knowledge of the subject area and understanding of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
- Skills/Abilities: Demonstrate the ability to seek and avail opportunities to increase professional competence as a teacher.
- Pre-employment Check: Ensure compliance with pre-employment requirements.
Section 2 – Essential Criteria
- Knowledge: Knowledge and understanding of approaches to assessment to promote effective teaching and student progress (to be assessed in interview).
- Skills/Abilities: Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to provide a supportive and challenging learning environment; use initiative; problem-solving; flexibility; teamwork; motivation of self and others; ability to work with students, colleagues, parents and wider community (interview).

Section 3 – Desirable Criteria
Desirable criteria may be applied to determine a manageable pool of candidates. Criteria include experience/teaching practice of Performing Arts at Level 2; involvement in school productions and extra-curricular activities; experience/teaching practice of teaching English at KS3. The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people as regulated activity.
