1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

  • (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where required to work.

2) Exercise of particular duties

(a) A teacher (not a principal) shall perform, following reasonable directions from the principal, such duties as may be assigned;

(b) Teachers not assigned to a specific school shall perform duties as directed by the board or the principal of any school they are required to work in.

1. Planning

1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons;

1.2 Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;

1.3 Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils\’ development and progress.

2. General

2.1 Promoting pupils\’ progress and well-being;

2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational, social matters, and future careers;

2.3 Making records and reports on pupils\’ personal and social needs;

2.4 Communicating with parents;

2.5 Collaborating with external persons or bodies approved by the employing authority and Governors;

2.6 Participating in relevant meetings.

3. Assessment/Reporting

Contributing to assessments, reports, and references on pupils, avoiding actions that might compromise the teacher’s position.

4. Staff Development/Professional Development

4.1 Participating in staff development schemes;

4.2 Reviewing and improving teaching methods and participating in training;

4.3 Advising and cooperating on curriculum development, teaching materials, and pastoral arrangements.

5. Discipline/Health and Safety

5.1 Maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding pupils\’ health and safety;

5.2 Participating in school meetings related to curriculum, administration, or pastoral care.

6. Public Examinations

Participating in preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, reporting, and supervising during exams.

7. Management and Administration

7.1 Contributing to staff selection, induction, and development;

7.2 Managing other teachers\’ work;

7.3 Participating in curriculum and school management activities;

7.4 Handling administrative tasks including support staff supervision and equipment management.

8. Working Days/Hours

8.1 Full-time teachers are available for 195 days/year, with specific hours and duties as specified by the Principal or employing board;

8.2 Teachers should not teach more than 25 hours/week in primary or special schools, or 23.5 hours in secondary schools;

8.3 Breaks of at least 30 minutes are required between 12 noon and 2 pm (or 2.30 pm in nursery settings).

9. Cover for Absence

Supervising pupils in the absence of their teachers, with specific conditions based on school size and teacher absence length.

The TA2 post holder reports to the Curriculum Lead and provides written reports to the Principal/Governors as specified.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Head of Post Primary Department is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, involved in policy, strategy, standards, and staff leadership to raise achievement and promote school development.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The applicant shall perform duties of a teacher and undertake leadership responsibilities, including:

  • Supporting school policies and curricular initiatives;
  • Leading the Post Primary Department, ensuring standards and effective management;
  • Monitoring teaching quality, pupil progress, and curriculum coverage;
  • Supporting transition and pastoral care;
  • Leading school improvement and staff development initiatives;

Additional leadership roles include being a member of the School Safeguarding Team, managing resources, and promoting the school’s ethos.

Further duties may be assigned as needed, and the successful candidate may need to relinquish any existing TA position.
