JOB TITLE: Teacher – Post-Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal
PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

- At the principal’s reasonable direction in a school.
- At a board’s direction if not assigned to one school.
2) Exercise of particular duties
- Carry out duties assigned by principal.
- Carry out duties assigned by board or principal if not assigned to one school.
1. Planning
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching pupils per educational needs, including setting and marking of work.
- Assessing, recording and reporting progress and attainment.
2. General
- Promote progress and well‑being of pupils.
- Provide advice and guidance on education, social matters, future careers; maintain records and reports.
- Record personal and social needs of pupils.
- Communicate with parents.
- Co‑operate with external persons or bodies approved by authority and Board.
- Participate in meetings related to above purposes.
3. Assessment/Reporting
Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils.
4. Staff Development/Professional Development
- Participate in staff development schemes and performance review.
- Review teaching methods and programmes; participate in further training and professional development.
- Co‑operate with principals and teachers on course development, teaching materials, programmes, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
5. Discipline/Health and Safety
- Maintain good order and discipline; safeguard health and safety on premises and during school activities.
- Participate in meetings related to curriculum and school administration.
6. Public Examinations
Prepare pupils, assess for public examinations, record and report assessments, and supervise examinations.
7. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration
- Contribute to selection, appointment and development of teachers; induce and assess probationary teachers.
- Coordinate or manage work of other teachers.
- Part in review, development and management of curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school.
- Participate in administrative tasks such as equipment ordering and supervision.
- Attend assemblies (subject to order).
- Register attendance and supervise pupils.
8. Number of days/Hours of work
Full‑time teacher: available for 195 days per year; not more than 190 days involving classroom teaching. Hours: 1,265 per year exclusive of travel and preparation. Max 25 classroom hours per week in primary, 23.5 in secondary. Mid‑day supervision not required unless separate contract.
9. Staff cover
Surveillance and teaching cover provided under specified conditions; details excluded for brevity.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.

SECTION 1 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
The following are essential criteria which will initially be measured at the shortlisting stage and which may also be further explored during the interview/selection stage. You should therefore make it clear on your application form how, and to what extent you meet these criteria. Failure to do so may result in you not being shortlisted.
Qualifications / Professional Membership
- Hold a teaching qualification meeting Northern Ireland recognition requirements.
- Hold a Level 6 qualification prepared for teaching English as the main subject.
Experience
- Demonstrable experience using a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ learning needs.
Other
- Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
SECTION 2 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (Interview)
Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum, safeguarding policy, SEND code, teaching strategies, digital classroom tools, current assessment methods.
Skills / Abilities – effective teaching, inclusive learning environment, collaboration, teamwork, motivation.
Values Orientation / Identification – evidence of experience and approach reflecting the school’s values/ethos.
SECTION 3 – DESIRABLE CRITERIA
- Minimum of one year demonstrable experience of teaching English at Key Stage 4.
- Ability to contribute to extra‑curricular provision at Craigavon Senior High School.
